So i'm a big Michael Mina fan, having eaten at Aqua in San Francisco SO many times back in the late 90s/early 2000s working down the street in downtown SF. We used to take new hires here and departing hires, and the tuna tartate became my all-time favorite. Took my father there, and he said it was the best meal of his life... So i've been partial to Michael's restaurants quite a bit. Had the super-expensive Michael Mina in Las Vegas (a bit of a letdown for $600 pricetag), and thus was excited to drive by XIV when in LA with my girlfriend over my birthday weekend last month.. We showed up early with no reservation, and they let us in even though half of the place was reserved for a big party. Arrived at opening around 6 and was seated immediately. Great interior, rather funky with sort of a "library" feel with mismatched chairs and dance music playing at a low volume over the speakers... a bit different, but nice. We were seated at a couch next to a fireplace so we both sat next to each other to watch the diners and overall comings and goings... Had a few signature drinks that i cant remember now, something with gin and watermelon i think? That was pretty good. Then ordered food. They had the tuna tartare that has made Michael Mina famous - and it did not disappoint. The tuna, pine nuts, pear, quail egg, habanero all combine together in yummy goodness acccompanied by toast points. Just for nostalgia alone, i loved it as i was brought back to my SF days at Aqua. My date got the scallop appetizer which was PHENOMENAL. I then ordered the Wagyu short ribs for entree (had steak at Boa the night before), which were really good.. and gf got a cobb salad and a lobster grilled cheese with tomato soup. My entree was good.. just nothing out of this world. Her lobster grilled cheese and soup was AMAZING!! Could not get enough of that, but really rich... Didnt have room for dessert, but otherwise, the food was really good and we had no complaints. The staff was very accomodating given that they were not taking reservations due to their event that night, and that was great.

This review is for the nightclub: I'm a huge fan of the concept, but not as huge a fan of the execution. I love the beds on the perimeter of the main dance floor (the "white room"), and the upper level, but I dislike the circular bar between the entrance and the other rooms. Things get confusing, and people loiter and congest the area. Also, the upper level of the white room is over ventilated, while the lower level of the white room gets humid and gross - maybe they can figure out a way to better balance the air flow. The "black room" is very interesting, with the stripper pole and all! What's also interesting, is that there are chains mounted to the wall in this room with REAL locking handcuffs. You have to call a staff member if you happen to get handcuffed to the wall - we learned the hard way. If you're looking for the restroom, on one side of the circular bar area, there is a men's restroom and a single unisex restroom. On the other side, there is a women's restroom and a single unisex restroom. So - if you happen to end up on the wrong side, you might be tricked into assuming that all of the restrooms are together. However, they are not! Keep walking! Four stars, because the whole bed thing is still novel to me. One star withheld because I think they can work on a few things.

Went with the wedding party after my brother got married. What a blast! Its likely we were the youngest ones there by years, but who cares? They had good drinks at reasonable prices considering the location. The funk band was really good. Can't go wrong with Prince! Fun, Fun, Fun.
