by Patricia Trear on I came here a few weeks ago to celebrate my birthday. When I called for reservations a week prior, I was outraged that there's a large deposit for 10+ people. So I just made reservations for 8, and when I came, I told them there were extra people. Parking is hard if you go on the weekends. There's valet/regular parking for $5-$10 around VM or you can try free street parking, if you're lucky. 1) Food Red tortilla chips and 3 types of dip (4.5/5). The 2 salsa dips were good, but I loved the bean dip. The table finished both trays of chips, and the waiter happily refilled them for us. I got the Ahi tuna tacos with sides of rice, beans, and shrimp bisque (4/5). The tacos were pretty delicious. The shrimp bisque was alright. I was hoping the shrimps were a bit larger though. I tasted my friend's carne asada tacos (3/5) and it wasn't that great. For delicious carne asada I can just go down the street to more authentic Mexican places. The turkey albondigas side was alright. I also tried another friend's chicken mole (2/5). This is the first time I've tasted mole, so I didn't know what it's supposed to taste like. Mole is definitely an acquired taste. 2) Drinks $5 margaritas is a great deal but it's for the regular margaritas, the premium ones were more expensive. I didn't have any margaritas, oh how ironic. Pina colada (4/5) - Yumm, and served in a coconut! The alcohol wasn't that strong though. Adios - This was the first adios I ever had, and I felt the buzz a little later lol. 3) Decor (5/5) I loved it! Weird/dark Dia de los Muertos twist. I loved the blue velvet couches and velvet wallpaper! The women's bathroom was very creepy! One of the stalls had a black curtain, and I had to make sure no one was behind it! 4) Service (3.5/5) Our waiter, who was a cool guy, was a bit hard to waive down. Maybe because the restaurant was getting more busy as the night passed by. All the waiters had Dia de los Muertos face paint. I wasn't sure if this was due to the fact that we went during Halloween weekend, or if this was everyday waiter costume. This was a great addition to the decor of the restaurant though. 5) Music (4.5/5) Great choice of old and new songs, great for dancing too! Really loud at times, I couldn't hear what the person next to me was saying. Overall, I had a great time, but was little disappointed with the food and prices. I gave 4 stars because I had a great time after dinner. The center tables (if empty) started to clear out by 11pm to make way for a small dance floor. Then everyone started dancing the night away. I might come back in the future for drinks and some dancing, but the food was definitely overpriced. Hey, it is in Hollywood after all.
by Gavin Grubel on haven't tried the food but definitely Marcus Shelby Orchestra killed it that night. A very good alternative to Yoshis or Savannah Jazz. I been to this place in the dot com Butterfly days and the hip hop PST Lavende Days, and now Coda. The sound is great. Not much into fusion food these days cause street food and vendors in Asia like Thailand can put 90% of SF restaurants to shame but definitely come here for the music. Mixed crowd came the night i came in with some older jazz cats and the young diners who were refining their musical tastes.
by Kelly S. on Happy birthday TO MY KITTEN Jenn!! It was saturday, we were full and faded not-so-out-of-towners ready to party. We got a table for ~13 people 50 bucks a head and it wasnt pre-planned. We just waited in line, asked the bouncer and 10 minutes later a sweet little table, a bottle of goose and patron! Well, turn me over and call me willy, i was happy. The venue itself is classy and nicely decorated and the music is consistent. I think? Con is that the restrooms are in the oddest locations and are super difficult to get to. I have to check this place out on a regular night.
