by Karen Y. on being a fan of the japanese iron chef, morimoto's was the first place on my list of musts ever since i knew that we were moving to philly. our experience reminded us of our late night dinner at gordon ramsey at the london. it's not a place to fulfill a biological need to eat but to celebrate taste-buds. not a big fan of the decor though, it took a while to ignore the giant phallus light permanently fixed to our table. the changing ambient lighting was kind of weird and it's hard to navigate my way to the bathroom in 3" heels on the faux pebble flooring. since it was our wedding anniversary we went with the $120 omakase with the $65 and $85 wine/sake omakase. the two different wine/sake omakases was a good decision, sometimes i preferred a wine from the $65 and sometimes i liked the other better. just another way to pair the drinks with the food. 5 stars alone for oysters and sake pairing. generally, i HATE both raw oysters and sake, and i would never order either let alone order both together. seeing how it was morimoto's, i put aside bias and ate it like i never had them before. both were delicious on their own and together. to me, oysters taste like the ocean floor, but not the oysters at morimoto's, these were clean and refreshing. i wanted twenty more plates of the big eye snapper carpaccio. all of the fish was incredibly fresh, buttery, and just delicious. the lobster and seared kobe beef was perfectly cooked. the only thing that didn't wow us was dessert, which wasn't bad, but a far cry from the previous 6 courses. the dessert wines more than made up for it though. service was impecable, professional and knowledgable. they really made it a special evening.
