by Darrell Y. on I can remember the first time I ever stepped foot into the Great American Music Hall like it was yesterday. Sometime back in 2001 or 2002 I had heard about the modern resurgence of the American burlesque scene, that is to say, the hip shaking, jazz wailing, tassle twirling, strip teasing girlie shows, peppered with bits of comedy, swinging tunes, and drunken, hootin' & hollerin' audiences. So I heard the Velvet Hammer Burlesque was making it's way from Los Angeles to San Francisco and thought I'd take the trip to the bay and check it out at the Great American. This venue immediately captivated me. It looked and felt like the type of venue where an oldschool burlesque gig might take place (sans the indoor smoking - excpet the ladies, they were on fire). I've been to a few of the Velvet Hammer Burlesque shows, and then eventually transitioned my way into the musical happenings that this venue offers. Any place that will host BORIS (one of my favorite Japanese drone/doom/psych/rock bands), and have their sonic tour de force sound AMAZING, is tops in my book. This place is spacious, absolutely gorgeous, and if you can score a spot on one of the sides on the upper level, or even right at the rear center, opposite the stage, you're going to have an amazing view of the entire venue. It's location is another bonus. If you're feeling parched, check out the Ha-Ra around the corner, or one of my personal favorites, the Edinburgh Castle just up the street and down the block. Hell, if you're feeling frisky, you have your choice of adult venues just up the block! Also, if you're going to come from out of town and make a night of it, stay in the Opal just a few blocks down the way and around the corner. I can't stress enough how amazing the sound at this venue is, having seen a ton of bands there and never once being disappointed in the quality of the acoustics. This is my favorite medium sized venue in the city, hands down!
