by Idella Teagues on I see allot a music in San Francisco if I had to choose my least favorite spot off the top of my head I'd pick the Mezzanine. Drinks: 8 dollar watered down drinks which take forever to get. Also if like a good beer on tap your out of luck. Sound: The room is also not that great for sound it's like someone put a nice sound system in an abandoned abattoir so there's a few spots of decent sound but there's this weird rumbling echo effect that makes everything sound muddled. Plus it's got way to much low end and is too loud which just adds to the problem. Quality of shows: Fortunately they rarely have any decent shows so I don't have to be tempted to go here. It's usually Crappy Canned techno music, guys with silk shirts and product in their hair, Location: The entrance area to this club is probably one of the dirtiest seediest blocks in SF. It basically opens up into a darkened crackhead alley. I'm the kinda person who'll walk through anywhere but I'd rather not have to go stand in piss and hang out here just to have a smoke. Main dislike: Overzealous aggressive security guards. They should have to buy you dinner before the pat down search. Plus on more than one occasion I've been physically grabbed and dragged into the alley to be screamed at for being a handed a joint. Because I'm now paranoid of this place on both of these occasions I had nothing in my pockets and they're were dozens of other people smoking as-well. The City of San Francisco needs all the live music venues it can get. But if this spot went under the music seen wouldn't suffer at all. Beside this spot is a music venue 20%-30% of time and a yuppie watering-hole the rest of the time.
by Juanita Stair on I've been here a bunch of times and the experiences have varied alot. I've settled on 3 stars to average out the few 5 star and many 1-2 star experiences I've had here. The first thing you have to remember about this place is the 20 cover. I'm no cheap ass, but the second you charge me a cover that high my expectations go up; Ruby Skye doesn't tend to deliver. Worse yet, if there's a big name DJ actually worth seeing, they triple the cover and get you even harder! The line is a small annoyance, but not too big of a deal if you time it right and have enough women with you. once your in, the dancefloor is huge, but usually crowded. I never had to try TOO hard for a drink though (one plus at least). The funniest (or wierdest) thing about the dance floor here was the number of sleazy indian guys I saw. I mean ok, i've been to less than diverse places, and i've been to sleazy places, but every once in a while, this place is just full of SLEAZY INDIAN GUYS. I don't get it... they literally pelvic thrust their way across the dancefloor molesting every poor girl in sight! seriously, I can't even TALK to a girl cause their anti-sleaze moves are on overdrive!!! when the SI (sleazy indian) is down, the place is alot better. I almost always like the music, and if you're ok with crowds it aint bad. Go VIP and you'll have even more fun though. The upstairs VIP room isn't too pricy, and it gets rid of the crowds, lines and everything else. Given the hefty drink prices, it's definately worth it if you planned on drinkng hard anyway. plus you get a better view of the pretty dancers!
by Courtney P. on The concept of Sugar Cafe is a novelty, with its two faces: cafe by day, bar/club by night. Even its transformation is a bit gimmicky... the mirrored sliding door that conceals the backlit wall of liquor during the day and hides the coffee and juice makers at around 5pm. my BFF and I were looking for a new place to work and snack, so Sugar Cafe was our choice of the day. He enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich with pickled jalapenos. We both had an iced tea, which was pretty standard. The barista/waitress was super friendly, chatted us up frequently and kept refilling our teas. Specialty cocktails are $11, which are a bit steep, IMHO... especially since most of them sounded a bit foo-foo for my tastes. I'll admit that I was a bit intrigued by the cucumber margarita and the pear martini (it was the rosemary syrup that drew me). I actually didn't try any because of the price, and I had to leave shortly after 5 anyway (the only serve cocktails in the evenings). Wi-fi was reliable and strong, although my friend claimed the network dropped for a bit for him. I might be back, just to change things up every once in a while. But for me, it's a bit of a trek. Plus, I hate braving the Union Square crowds.
