by Jacqualine Appia on Superior fish quality, very friendly staff, nice authentically Japanese decor and environment. I had the Sashimi Omakase last time, and it was amazing and incredible to behold. Thin slices of scallops with lime in between and sashimi shrimp with the heads on. Brilliant! I recommend making a reservation... its a small joint, and if its packed, its hard to pull a walk-in. However after making a reservation, they had a nice table custom setup for our group, even with kid plates and plastic on the floor for the kiddos. The only reason I don't go 5 stars is the Sushi Omakase I had on my birthday. While perfect and delicious in fish quality, the portions and presentation for a 50$ dinner were sparse I felt.
by Lindy Hawbaker on About five years ago - yes five, so bear in mind that my perspective on Light Lounge dates from that time - my college roommate threw a birthday party for her boyfriend at this place. Time marches on, and things change; they broke up and she married someone else, and I haven't been to Light Lounge since. But, as Sophia Petrillo in the "Golden Girls" was so fond of saying - Picture it: NYC, 2004. My roommate had reserved a table for all of the guests at Light Lounge, so we dressed in our best and headed down there. Light is located in a good area between Park and Lexington, but if memory serves correctly, the exterior of Light Lounge reminded me more of someone' s garage/a business service door than the entrance to a hip lounge, and it didn't match the business feel of the area. I also remember the street as being kind of deserted, but I attribute that to three things: 1.) it was night - duh - and we arrived early, before anyone else was really out; 2.) the area where Light is located is not necessarily a typical nightclub/bar/lounge area; and 3.) I wasn't as familiar with NYC then as I am now, and didn't know what real desertion was (Wall Street after 7 p.m., anyone?). Anyway, back to Light. We were forced to stand behind the quasi-obnoxious velvet rope for what seemed like an inordinate amount of time. The bouncer finally checked our IDs, and we were ushered into a very nice setting. Light Lounge, at least when I was there, featured bunches of white couches complemented by tables with small votive candles. The lighting was low - I think there was also a bunch of white drapery throughout the place, but could be wrong - and the place had a nice, low-key atmosphere. Although there was a DJ, the music was not totally screaming and we all felt like we were in a mature setting, not the sketchy dives you get used to in college. The bar ran along the left-hand side of the lounge. We had our own waitress exclusively for our table - or rather, our couch - and she assured us she would bring us whatever we wanted throughout the night. So we settled in and got ready to enjoy some nice grown-up drinks as we waited for the birthday boy, who had no idea what was awaiting him as it was a surprise. Eventually he walked in, we all shouted surprise, he hugged us all, and the place started to fill up. And then we got a surprise of our own. My roommate had expressly reserved our couch for the entire evening, but we hadn't been at Light an hour when our waitress came up to her and informed her that if we wished to keep the couch for the evening, we'd have to buy something, and no, the drinks we'd currently purchased didn't count. My roommate explained that she'd made a reservation for the evening, but the waitress told her that their records indicated that she'd only made the reservation for one hour and that if she wanted to extend it, we needed to purchase something. Otherwise, our couch would be given away to other people. The Lounge was filling up, she said, and they needed the seating. Since at that point there was nowhere else for us to sit, we decided to give in to Light's obnoxious demands. But here's the kicker: we couldn't just purchase any old something, we had to purchase a BOTTLE of something. The waitress gave us a menu, and we ended up purchasing the cheapest thing on there, which was a $200 bottle of Grey Goose vodka. Throwing aside the fact that none of us were big drinkers, let alone vodka drinkers, no one had $200 in cash to hand over. The only one with a credit card was the birthday boy, and he was forced to charge the Grey Goose just so we could stay at Light. Happy Birthday, indeed. It went downhill from there. My roommate was so pissed off about the whole situation that we only stayed another hour. We left and went to Naked Lunch in the Village, where we had a much better time dancing to 80's music until they closed the place and kicked us out. The Grey Goose? It didn't make the cab ride downtown with us. It remained, in all of its expensive hip glory, on our table at Light. That was a long time ago, but I still don't know if I'd go back to Light. Aside from the fact that my lounge/club days are mostly in the past, the $200 we were forced to pay in order to keep sitting on a white couch was ridiculous. The staff were also pretty unhelpful in our attempts to resolve the situation, and with those two things combined, Light Lounge gets 2 stars from me.
by Patrick F. on The food is BLAND and the drinks are mediocre. The staff is attentive, professional and pleasant at least. I've been here more times than I'd care to admit, usually for some promotional event (that served mozzarella sticks... what?) or for a quick bite to eat (before La Verdad opened) and I can tell you, you're not missing much if you pass on this place. It gets drastically un-civilized in there after 10 or 11pm too.
