by Anne Marie B. on My first time inside Mayes was on a bumping Friday night. word. yeah, it gets really hot in there. like can't move through the sea of people, must constantly go outside to dry off all the sweat, hot. which is cool if you're into that. but i prefer my bars divey and my clubs aerated. Not so much my scene, but if it's yours, more power to you, I applaud your frat party stamina. My second time inside Mayes was to get some oysters during Monday happy hour. Boy this place is different when you're one of only two groups inside and there are tables set up where the dance floor used to be. I can get used to all this space! Two oyster varieties were discounted, we had to ask about them and other specials, and it was really cold inside (ironic, no?). I thought the oysters were pretty tasty, but I feel that way about most oysters. I liked the accoutrements and I appreciated that they weren't served over a ton of rock salt that could get stuck in my oyster and provide for an unpleasant chomping experience. I couldn't help but feel like this place had more important things to be doing than be serving us. I'll go anywhere for cheap oysters, but I don't know if I'd go back to try other items here. It felt like I was eating in a club, but it was a club they were setting up for the big party, so I didn't even get the excitement of dancing along while I ate.
by Loralee Galdi on This place usually has good DJs, but we came here on a whim on a Wednesday (or was it Thursday?) and the place was DEAD. Another thing I didn't like was that it was nowhere near BART. If you wanted to take public transportation, you'd have to get on the shady MUNI. The only thing I liked about this place was the music they played, and the awesome dance floor to accommodate said awesome music. The bartender wasn't that knowledgeable, but then again, it was a Wednesday night, so she was probably new. The drinks are also priced at the same level as San Jose bars and clubs. Me no likey.
