i have heard about the phoenix for years now and its reputation as the "rock star hotel" in san francisco. well, i am a musician, but i am also a very light sleeper who needs her rest. i feared i may not sleep, but i was intrigued. i recently had a gig where i was a guest performer and flew into SF at the last minute. i met the band at the airport and we took a super shuttle to their hotel (the phoenix). i was hoping to find an open room, so i could stay near the band. they had one open room, but it was on hold...for 5 more minutes. so, while the band unloaded into their rooms and repacked the gear for transport to the venue, i waited with my bags, hoping for that room. the front desk staff were great and when the 5 minutes had passed, they called the person they were holding it for (who i think was hoping more rooms would open up) and told them they had a guest in the lobby that needed the room, if they didn't. i was ready to jump in a cab and have visited the city enough that i had some back up plans, but really, i just wanted to take a shower and get to the venue. boom. the room was mine. the band went off to set up for sound-check while i showered and got settled in. the bathrooms are a bit outdated and the toilet did have a flushing issue, but everything was clean, and i figured out how to get the toilet to work. patience. just held the handle down longer and it was fine. totally dig the recycling bin in the room. have only seen that in europe. should be standard. i was a bit perplexed by the windows that don't close all the way. of course later when i settled in for sleep and looked for an air conditioner, i understood those windows a bit more. they are those 50s windows that you churn out with a handle. there were two on either side of a fixed window...all floor to ceiling. i actually love those windows, just not in a hotel room where i am sleeping alone on the edge of the tenderloin. but, the front desk does keep an eye out and the band was there, so i felt safe. but honestly, someone could kick those windows in with no problem and although they would probably be quite bloody by the time they got into your room, it is a bit unnerving. especially when my first room (i switched the 3rd day) had a window that wouldn't shut all the way. in the end, i was thankful for those windows. i opened them up just a bit, turned the ceiling fan on, and was able to cool off enough to fall asleep. i was glad i brought my heavy duty earplugs though. i am a very light sleeper and with the windows open, it was not easy to fall asleep. the street noise, the doors of other rooms shutting, the noise in the courtyard - which i have to say was very minimal. as a performing musician, i was grateful for the quiet courtyard. i could hear people talking, but no one was wasted drunk at 2am jumping in the pool. i did miss saturday night because by the time we got back from our gig, it was after 3am and i was so drunk, i passed out, fully dressed, on a bed that wasn't even my own. the guys said they stayed up drinking and talking in the courtyard all night. i'd had sake, wine, and champagne by that time, so i literally passed out. they were able to make sure i was safe by pulling open the curtains of the room (to see me crashed out) because it was near where they were in the courtyard. i'm guessing saturday night could have been a party, but i was so far gone, i have no clue. i just know that it was loudest on sunday around noon while i was trying to sleep off my hangover in my room, which was further away from the courtyard and upstairs. i stayed on for 2 more days and it was pretty quiet both nights (sunday & monday). the front desk staff were never rude to me. i purchased bottled water from them at all hours of the night. they called cabs for me in a timely manner. they were always kind to me and saw me in all kinds of states. i found them to be direct, interesting, and professional. there are a few things i wish for the phoenix though. a small fridge and microwave in every room would be great. i ate some fantastic food while in san francisco, but i had to either leave my unfinished portions at the restaurant, or give them away on the street, which i did. also, more croissants at breakfast. by the time i came down (i didn't wait until the last moment, but the top of the last hour) they were all gone, or there were only a couple left. i had a great time, phoenix, thanks.

At least as far as I'm concerned, this bar is the absolute definition of average. The sole distinction it offers from other bars of its ilk is that there is a ridiculously large Buddha idol that overlooks the entire bar. The drinks were nothing special. The music, at least when I went, was fine but nothing overly memorable. The place gets very crowded so if that is your scene you will probably enjoy this place.
