Ok, so I'm used to the after hour staple in vegas where you see a bunch of people grinding their teeth and giving each other massages, BUT they're all having a good time. Drai's in Hollywood completely fell short in the fun department. Of course even though we were on a list and had a table waiting for us upstairs, there was drama at the door and we were left waiting another 20-30 minutes. We get upstairs and big surprise, the joint was empty. Just a few scattered parties strewn around the pool and go-go dancers looking just as unenthusiastic as the clientele. But here's the kicker of the night! We order a couple of bottles and try to enjoy the rest of our evening and so we go dancing. The dance floor is the size of a small studio apartment and so to say the least everyone was shoulder to shoulder. Although the music was ok, we decide to go back to our table after 5 minutes of battling bouncers, tauntauns (girls in high heels that walk like the mythical creature) and douche bags with sunglasses on. Come to find our unfinished bottle of veuve was jacked. So we tell our waitress, she says half heartedly "it's not our responsibility, sorry about it." Gee... Thanks all in all if you want to throw your money away for a bad time go to Drais

Came here for my cousin's birthday. Called the same day and was able to get a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday night. When we first arrived, a lady checked our coats (how cool is that?!) and then the hostess took us to our seats. Our server recommended a Scottish Mule (cocktail with Hendrick's, Cucumber, Fresh Lime, Ginger Beer). It was really refreshing. We also ordered a bottle of wine ( a Riesling spatlese, which was also really good). Food at XIV is somewhat family/tapas style. Basically you order off the menu (everything is $8, portions are about 2-3 bites each). The catch is that everyone at the table will be charged 8 for whatever is ordered, so everyone gets a portion of everything that is ordered. We ordered the main lobster with potatoes and truffles (the lobster was fresh, and it was enough where it didn't leave me craving more), the bay scallops tempura (probably my favorite dish of the night. The tempura was soft but a little cruchy on the outside because of the tempura flakes and the sweetness of the passion fruit complimented this dish very well), We then moved onto the porcini risotto (it was too lemony and was my least favorite dish of the night), the ahi tuna tar tare (it was spicy but really fresh), the jidori chicken (the chicken was tender and still juicy and the caramelized onion sauce was delicious), and the crispy pork belly (I love pork belly, and thought that this one was a little on the drier side) and finished off the meats with a braised short rib (good flavor, and still fairly tender). When our server came back to check on us, he asked what our favorites were. He then said that the crab crepe is really good (which we didn't order, so we decided to order it then...it was okay, but definitely not my favorite thing of the night). We also ordered the Chaource (cheese, with a guava puree-which was so goood). For dessert we had the white chocolate cube (a cube made of white chocolate filled with deliciousness) and they also brought out a birthday dessert (a white chocolate edible candle, even the wick was edible!) We got two glasses of dessert wine as well ( my cousin ordered a red wine that our server recommended and I ordered a glass of the Mossolino Muscat). The Muscat was probably one of the best wines I have had. EVER. Once we got home, my cousin and I searched for it online and bought four bottles of it. Anyways, with my cocktail, our $60 bottle of wine, our 11 items, two glasses of dessert wine, valet (at $11, it was ridiculous and probably my only qualm with this place), tax and tip, our bill came out to be $360. Definitely more than what I had imagined on spending. Was it worth it? Yes, if I had the money and when I save up again, I will definitely come back

I initially visited GAMH last Tuesday for the Mates of State concert--surprising, considering that I've been attending concerts in SF since my high school days. I went with a friend who swears by parking a few blocks away near Larkin/California. And what do you know? The sage was correct. As soon as I entered, I was struck by the dense, shimmery, baroque embellishment covering the ceiling. The rectangular floor is flanked by a seated area and there's also a large balcony level that provides sightlines that are as good as, if not better, than the ones you'll get on the floor. It's a handsome place with superb acoustics. If the band you came to see doesn't live up to your expectations, you can always swing around the corner and get your kicks at the Century Club. If you dig that sort of stuff, that is.
