This place has potential. The only complaint that I have is the live band that sings top 40s instead of a DJ doing top 40s. It was weird and put a damper on my mood. This place is DEFINITELY FOR THE OLDER CROWD! I didn't see anyone under 40!! Except for me and maybe 10% of the crowd. Please put in a DJ not a local band!!

Normally I usually don't say anything if there's something I don't like. But the bowling alley at Chelsea Piers blows dogs for quarters. Actually, It blows dogs for much more than that. Although the atmosphere and the decor are top notch (enormous televisions, leather chairs, beautiful bar) the positives are far and few between. The selection at the bar is puzzling. There are numerous wines for sale, either by the bottle or by the glass, and mostly only top shelf liquor is served. However, the beer selection is rather weak, and when I think of bowling, I think of beer, not a three grape blend of red wine. And with the clientele that 300 seems to aiming to bring in, I don't see much Budweiser and Miller Lite being sold. And don't let me get started on the price. I'll save that for later. The ball and shoe rental process is quite easy, and they even have a counter where you can find a ball that fits your fingers and is the appropriate weight for your size, without you having to search all over the bowling alley for the one ball that they might have that fits your style. But don't let me get started on the price, I'll save that for later. The lanes themselves are quite comfortable, with leather benches and chairs flanking the electronic scoreboard. Large televisions sit above the end of the lanes, so there is no straining your neck to see who's winning the sporting event that is shown on the screen. And the electronic scorecard does all the work for you, but this is now a staple at most bowling alleys throughout the civilized world. There were five of us there on a Saturday afternoon, and we bowled two games, and four of us had two to three beers each, with one having only soda. Between the games ($8 per person), the shoe and ball rental ($6 per person), and the drinks, our total came to.. ready? $200. Normally, five people bowling two games with shoe rentals and a few drinks would run somewhere around $60-$80. But because this is Chelsea Piers, you can't expect anything to be reasonably priced. And of course, all this was not without controversy. The person in our group who reserved the lane with his credit card was charged the full price on his card, even after he put in the over $100 in cash from some of the others in group. So of course the original purchase was cancelled, along with his card. After a phone call to the bank, the issue was resolved. And do you think the staff did anything to alleviate the trouble? Well, yes, they actually did. They handed him two free passes for the next time we come. In my opinion, I don't see those passes being used. Oh, and after we left, we were lucky to have the $20 we were charged for parking. Ready for the terrible pun? This bowling alley is a gutter ball.

Here's another insider party that I like in SF. Every Wednesday night they host DJs in this SOMA gallery. It draws an eclectic crowd, from financial district types, to artists, models, hipsters, and lots of SF riff-raff. I think it's free before a certain hour, and maybe $5 after. If I remember right, they have sponsors sometimes, so you'll get the odd free cocktail too. But if you like good DJs in a gallery type environement of art, and cute people, this is a fun event. Check it.
