by Kristy d. on I took my husband here for his birthday and I was a little taken aback when we arrived; not at all like some of our previous adventures. The whole place is dark, and not in a overly romantic way. Several slimly older guys with cheesy mistresses were throughout the place. Very outdated and a little creepy if you aren't used to that sort of thing. I'd probably not think twice in NY or Chicago, but it was weird here for some reason. After we were seated, a gruff, giant guy with a New Jersey accent introduced himself to us as our waiter. When we said we weren't ready yet, he grunted and walked away. We were a little more discouraged. But as we looked around we saw a ton of older/elderly patrons, usually a good sign in an Italian restaurant. When the food came I was really worried. The food looked sloppy and lacking in any presentation. Like something someone's grandma made - not at all fitting of the pricing (it's not cheap here) . One taste and we were turned around: it was something someone's grandma had made! Someone's Italian Grandma who knew how to make things yummy! It wasn't that it was completely amazing, but it was really good. Really good. We were very relieved. My friend told me later that when he was in HS/college he would take girls here as a litmus test. If they didn't freak out on the atmosphere, then they would be able to enjoy the rewards of the food. :-)
by Morris Hausher on Let me just say that this place has grown on me. I used to get conned into ordering off of their limited main menu, but now I know the trick. This place is only worth it if you go for sushi! They have a convertible sushi bar, which is so much fun to eat off of. I usually just get 6 pieces of sushi and a seafood fried rice on the side. It adds up to around $50 and that's including tip. Still a splurge for me, but it's worth being a nice treat every once in a while.
