by Katy E. on Totally kitschy to the point of tackiness. Spinning pinatas hanging from the ceiling? Really? The sombreros on the ceiling are kind of cool, but other than that I was unimpressed with the decor. Oh, and the pepto bismol pink bathroom kind of made me want to puke. My friend Chelsea and I showed up for a midweek dinner and were seated right away. Unfortunately we were at an awkward table, that looked like it should have been attached to the party that was seated next to us. The chips and dip were pretty good; it was neat that they served a bean dip in addition to the traditional salsa. Salsa was far from the best I've ever had, but it wasn't bad. The plates were fairly expensive - $16.50 a plate for Mexican food seems pretty steep to me. The plates are large, but most of it is rice and beans. We split chicken fajitas which were good, but there wasn't much meat on the plate. The turkey empanadas we had as an appetizer were okay, but nothing to write home about. I was under the weather and refrained from drinking, but Chelsea said her margarita started off strong and got pretty weak at the bottom of the glass. Once again - not impressed. Service was mediocre. I wouldn't go back for food, but I would like to try whatever it is that they serve in the pineapple. After that, Velvet Margarita Cantina, I feel that we will part ways, never to meet again.
by Kati Shope on Yee Yee Ruby Skye!! I finally had a chance to check out this club when one of my favorite DJs (Armin Van Buuren) decided to make an appearance on a Tuesday night. I had been so excited to come to this club, and it was pretty glam... but here are some main points that you should know before going: * They are known for dance music-- not top 40's or any of that pop culture business. So if you are into house, progressive trance, any electro dance music... this is your place. * The crowd varies, but overall its a pretty clean crowd. The crowd you most likely want to stay away from is closest to the stage. I definitely was next to someone throwing bows because he was so oblivious to his seizure-like dancing. * In the center of the front (right below the DJ) there is an arctic AC pumping blizzard-like air at the crowd. This being said, it turns out the best place on the dance floor is actually in the middle of the crowd rather than on the outskirts or at the front. The club had an amazing sound system, but I was kind of disappointed that they pulled in a world class DJ and pretty much the only lights they had to accent his set were flood lights and a projector. Oh well, I had a great night, the club was awesome, and the music was amazing. Check the lineup for the next couple weeks, they get big names almost weekly. If you like house/electonic/dance music, I've found your favorite SF dance club right here.
by Otelia Lucarelli on its a cool place. this is actually a 3.5 review because although i listen to alot of jazz i'm no expert and i really don't like paying for a $20 cover. that said its a great addition to the upperwest side. the place is really small and they do tend to squeeze you in here. since i'm really a jazz simpleton i prefer cleo's any day.
