by Sivan B. on Hmmm... I vacillated over whether to go with two or three stars. Double and I had dinner here last night. Or supper, rather, I suppose. The food was better than I expected. Actually, I thought the food was damn good. Though I've had WAY better food for WAY less money elsewhere. (Ex. Papalote's burritos, anything from Burma Superstar.) The food: I'm a vegetarian, Double is not. They have a fixed food menu, 5 courses. They were kind enough to make a 5-course vegetarian meal for me (vegetarian, not vegan, thankfully) and it was really quite delicious. Double's courses included fish and red meat and he loved them both, though he said the fish was ridiculously amazing, that it was more like eating butter than fish. We both inhaled the dessert as if it were the last dessert we were ever going to eat. It was possibly the most impressive part of the meal, but really, it was all damn good. The setting: Eating in bed is pretty awesome. Ladies, don't wear short skirts or dresses. Being comfortable in bed requires the ability to sit and lie in several positions, and short skirts and dresses are not conducive to this. Overall I was won over by the heavenly decor mixed with random political art. The place was designed to impress, and, ambiance-wise it certainly did. There was live entertainment while we ate. I think the setting was as awesome as the food. The timing: DON'T ARRIVE HUNGRY! While they say "seating at 7:00," what they mean is, arrive at 7:00, spend money on drinks in addition to the ridiculous amount you're about to spend on dinner, be seated at about 7:30, and be served your first small course between 7:45 and 8:00. Then, as the night progresses, they will feed you small meals every so often. Just enough to keep you from being hungry, but never keeping you really full. Arrive having eaten something within the past couple of hours, and be prepared for a long leisurely night of slow tiny meals. This place is about the experience, not about being fed a ton of great food as soon as you arrive. The price: With tip we ate for about $185.00 for two people. This included the three glasses of house champagne I had, the one beer Double had, the meal, and the tip. This DID NOT INCLUDE the $20 massage that Double unwittingly participated in. The masseuse offered a massage, Double participated, and she told him AFTER that there was a $20 charge. Now, I'm familiar with the practice of tipping your masseuse after such a service, if you feel she deserved a tip, but to charge for the service and not inform he customer until after, in a place that is all about the overall setting and the "frills" (eating in bed, live music, etc.), well, she should have stated the price up front. Now, at least Double got a massage out of the deal. I only got aggravated and got an aggravated boyfriend. Not nice Supperclub, not nice. Conclusion: Go to Supperclub once, for the experience, when you feel like spending a ton of money for a unique experience. Or stay home instead, eat take-out in your pajamas, enjoy the person you're with, and leave this place to the visiting New Yorkers who are used to paying too much for too little.
