by Christina C. on I'm probably the last Korean in Manhattan over the age of 21 or with a 21+ fake ID to have even heard of or gone to Third Floor Café, adjacent to Koreatown on 32nd St. It's tucked in a regular office building with no signage whatsoever. Anyways, I decided to check it out with a few of my Third Floor veteran friends after hearing about their happy hour specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8pm. This place is a crowd pleaser for those who want to be seen in the Korean scene. (Sidenote: Ladies, cover yourself because there are some skeevy looking dudes who look as if they are on the prowl, but too scared to do anything about it. They'll only follow you with their beady little eyes.) After reading many rateclubs reviews on this place, I finally experienced the infamous elevator ride. It was the size of a broom closet and everyone is all up on each other like it's Circle nightclub all over again except it only fits a maximum of 5. Cozy? I think not. Walking in, I noticed that the interior is pretty nice. When I first heard of this joint, I assumed to see an interior similar to Pocha, with steel tables and plastic chairs. Instead, we were seated at a small booth where plush red couches and pillows were out for one's disposal to lie down in just in case one reached an intense food coma from copious amounts of beer and fried chicken. This sounds like a situation I would most likely find myself in. I started off with a Coors Light, since this was the only light beer they served during happy hour. Okay, I can deal with that. The happy hour alcohol selection isn't really worth mentioning, but it's a very important part of one's happy hour experience so I'll spill. You have a choice of either white or red wine, Budweiser or Coors Light. :/ Another thing worth mentioning was that our food service was way too slow. After annoying our server multiple times, we were finally served plates of fried pork cutlet (donkatsu) with a little cabbage salad on the side and baskets full of fried chicken. The entrees were mediocre and they weren't anything spectacular, but I felt a need to stuff my face with $18 worth of food. The donkatsu was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The fried chicken was definitely crunchy, but it lacked a lot of flavor that its neighboring rival, Mad For Chicken has. However, I was beginning to go into my happy place after a few beers and platefuls of fried eats. I was also eagerly wanting to try the bulgogi cheese bap (beef and cheese fried rice) too, but they said that they it wasn't available that particular night. Not cool, Third Floor chefs. Our server understood our frustration and probably saw the saddened look on my face so she quickly brought out the final ending to our meal: ddukbokgi (spicy rice cakes). The rice cakes were soft and chewy and the hot chili sauce was sufficiently spicy to my liking. Overall, my experience here was good, since I was in the midst of great company. If our food and drinks came out more quickly, I would have added another star to this review.
by Leif Gass on The music is PUMPING, the crowd is THUMPING, and all this until 4a.m. Who the hell goes out 'til 4a.m. on a Sunday night??? I guess I do. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. $15 cover, well worth every penny.
