Grace Tavern, it took me a long time to get here, but I did. Had to wait till after the second trip, and food, to write the review. So here goes nothing. Been here two times, on weekend nights, both times walked right up to a seat at the bar. Good start. The tap menu is slim, and two of those spots are/were ciders, step backwards. The bottle list was a bit beefier though. step forward. Atmosphere was the right kind for me, chill, pressed tin ceiling, long bar and little dining room. Another step ahead. The bartenders were cool, although a bit busy. Peak Organic Pale Ale was really good. Then there is the food. Everyone on here was raving about the Blackened Green Beans, so I had to try the small ($2.00) size of them. When I got them I couldn't believe they were only 2 bucks... there was more than I or my buddy could eat, and actually I didn't feel right eating them. I just know they can't be any good for you. Greasy, flavored of all the other things that were ever cooked there ever, and just a little too much. if that makes sense. I can see why people go ape for them, but I was a bit weary. I also had a burger with bleu cheese and something, cooked almost completely rare, that scared me too, but I ate it and it was really really damn good. (the next days trips to the toilet led me to believe I should have gotten it a little more cooked). They make a note on the menu of calling fries 'frites' and guess what, they were plain old SYSCO frozen french fries (the time I was there anyway). My buddy commented that "the frites were good" and I nearly put him in the million dollar dream for using the term frites on obviously standard issue fries. Anyway, after I berated him on that we got on to a good night at drinking at a very nice bar. Last note... my favorite beer here is at $5.00, 50 cents cheaper than anywhere else I know about. POPE, you have been beat on that finally... And for anyone who wants to know, that beer is La Fin Du Monde, so if you are reading and know you can get it for 5 or less alert me so I can track it on the "LaFindex" which right now is hovering around 6 bucks a bottle. Thanks.

I had a lot of fun the night I came out to the place. The Burlesque show is pretty cool. The crowd is diverse and the drinks were pretty cheap but they were stiff. The way I likem. The only cons were: no signage so it was hard to find, small cover and it was hot. I hate places that get hot and stuffy but I liked this place for some reason. Good place to hang if you are in downtown.

We went for a friend's birthday party last Friday night. My friend and I drove around looking for it. He was convinced it was on another street (Cahuenga). I said I thought it must have been the old Goldfinger's as that's the only club I knew on Yucca. Turned out yes, it's on Yucca and yes, it's the old Goldfinger's. We went in and I could see they had changed the decor a bit. There was some stupid blue lit "play" button on the bar. It looked badly beveled. How long has this place been opened? And there were very few bottles of alcohol. Hypnotiq next to the Hennesey? Weird. Is the alcohol in alphabetical order here? But I do have to say those $11 French Martinis were pretty good. Props to the bartender who filled all the orders by herself and kept the pace up. I even saw her dumping ice into the bar! Sheesh, they don't even have barbacks here? I hope they pay that woman well! They were playing deep house that night, something the birthday boy enjoyed. Something I can only enjoy for a few minutes while energetically dancing. Something my friend hated though we stuck around for an hour. Everyone there reminded me of the folks that used to be at college parties. It definitely is a chill place, no scene, no cover and therefore unreasonable for its high drink prices. I didn't have a good time and drained me so much that I didn't even want to go out the next night for the fear I'd have exactly the same disappointing experience. (and yes, I miss the old Goldfinger's with a passion now!)
