Overall, I always have a great time when I go to El Rio. Most of my experiences at this bar have been for the Mango lesbian party, and I always have a blast dancing and enjoying the scene. Pro's: - Great outside patio - Mango (4th Saturday of the month, 3:00pm-8:00pm, $8 cover) - Fairly inexpensive drinks - Great music (mostly based on my Mango party experiences) - Shuffleboard, I think that's what it's called. Con's: - Slow bar/ drink service - Long, slow bathroom lines (Mango experiences only) - Cash only bar.

I went here for my birthday because I heard the dancing was good. The place had a real feel of authenticity and I was impressed by how the space was used. The drinks were great and the dancing was awesome. I look forward to coming earlier next time to try the food.

I spent about half an hour composing this review in my head while waiting for my food, but the subsequent awesome concert blew all that out of my mind. Let's see if I can recreate it. Awesome: The decor here is schweet. The carved wood bar is beautiful. Good: The sound engineer at the concert (MC Frontalot w/ Schaffer the Darklord, 11/25/07) was good. I believe said engineer worked for the venue, not the artists. It was awesome to be at a show where I could actually hear what the vocalist was saying. Bad: The food is so badly-organized here that I'm astonished they have the nerve to offer it. Maybe it was just an off night, but the routine was this: get one of the rushed, cranky barmaids to give you a menu. Place an order with them. Loiter at the end of the bar (dodging the staff going in and out of the kitchen) and watch for your food, because they don't bring it to you or even make sure it goes to the right person. I waited over an hour for my burger because someone else picked it up and it had to be remade. I was told "that happens sometimes" by a barmaid who was not at all interested in the fact that I was ravenously hungry and my friends had all finished eating already. I was informed that there was only one cook in the back and she was overwhelmed. I sympathize, I do - I have friends in food service. But to have only one cook on a night there is a local artist performing and then be rude to a justifiably irritated customer is a fast way to lose my patronage. So. Five stars for the venue and the sound, one star for the terrible service; average: 3 stars. I'll be coming back, but I won't be eating here again.
