I went to the Varity with an out of town guest since I hadn't been yet and wanted to go since it seems to be such an Atlanta landmark. I loved the cashiers and the upbeat "whadda have whadda have", but the food was really just eh to me. We went for lunch and had chili dogs with onion rings and French Fries. The chili dogs were just average but the plus was how the buns were cut so it made it easier to pick up the dogs and eat them. The French fries were bland but the onions were good. We went back that afternoon to try the fried apple pie and orange drink before heading into traffic. The fried pie was just too greasy for me and the frosted orange was way to sweet. I don't see myself in the future craving this place but will bring out of town guests here for the history and novelty of The Varsity.

Just checked out the new venue last night. I was there strictly for the live music and did not sample the food.  The menu looked inventive but not the kind of food I generally eat - a bit pretentious for my tastes.  In my opinion, they could use a couple of casual items (even if it's just a high-end burger with a $14 price tag) to bridge the gap between the hip dinner crowd and those that are there to check out the bands.  We did order a brownie dessert but the brownie was nothing more elaborate than one that could be baked at home.  I'd expect a more rich and gooey square, though I concede the caramel ice cream was very tasty!   We tried a couple of the signature cocktails but didn't have an overwhelming care for either (though they were stiff and not weak). A quick recap: we showed up around 10pm for the live music, paid a very reasonable cover charge.  The whole place was still full from the dinner crowd.  The band came on but the dance floor remained empty - kind of an awkward scene because most people were there for dinner and did not pay enough attention to the quality band on stage (Pleasuremaker).   Slowly the dinner crowd departed and almost no one was left in the joint by set break.  I think this has a lot to do with a lack of symmetry between the dinner crowd and the music scene (or also the band not drawing well enough on this particular night).  The dinner crowd did not appear to be live music afficionados like myself; they apparently need to push hard to attract a separate group of people for the live music or build a better bridge from dinner to nightlife. My final comments as I'm sure the owners/management are paying close attention: -add a few more heady beer options for the clientele that is not drawn to more expensive cocktails and wine.  Aside from the Speakeasy IPA, a couple more interesting picks would have been nice. -play some A-game music on the PA while dinner is in session.  There is so much good stuff out there I'm not even going to elaborate. Very cool space and I wish for nothing but success.

Like most of the other Here to Serve restaurants, Aja is more of a social scene than a foodie haven.  A group of 10 dined here on a recent Friday night.  We had a reservation for 9 pm but didn't get seated until 30 minutes later (the place was packed).  This was fine as it gave us some time to check out the place.  Great decor and the bar area is huge.  There were quite a few big tables that had only women- on this night at least, there was a good ratio for the single guys there. The menu had a mix of Chinese, Indian, and Thai dishes.  I started out with chile spiced edamame and their miso soup.  For my dish, I had the Kung Pao chicken ($14).  The waitress said all their dishes are served family style and meant to be shared, but I had no problems finishing my dish by myself (it wasn't that big).  The quality is what you would expect at any standard Chinese joint.  I also asked for the dish to be extra spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. Overall, I would say it's fun to check out the scene, but don't expect a high quality meal.
