After seeing some pictures on Twitter from a friend's visit to Maggiano's in Orlando, I decided the husband and I needed to check out the one that had opened in the Domain here. I promptly went online and made reservations and joined their email list so I could receive the $10 off coupon. Both were smart decisions. I was a little nervous when we walked in because there were several people waiting but we were seated right away thanks to our reservations. Our waiter even told us that it was common to wait an hour or more on the weekends. I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere of the place. I knew it was a chain but it didn't have the feel of one. Also, the interior was upscale but the checkered table clothes and china plates made it feel like grandma's dining room. The service was excellent. Our waiter, Tommy, was attentive and knowledgeable without being annoying. Every staff member we encountered was extremely friendly. My husband and I both enjoyed our entrées immensely and were surprised by the large quantities we received. The husband ordered the grilled shrimp scallopini, which is one of the specials this month. The plate arrived with 12 shrimp on a bed of steamed vegetables and risotto. I ordered the mushroom ravioli al forno. The dish was excellent and I had enough to bring home leftovers for lunch. We also split Nonna's toasted pound cake for dessert. Once more, it was a large serving that included a thick slice of the toasted pound cake, caramelized bananas, a scoop of ice cream and chocolate syrup. All I can say is yum. I do look forward to going back to Maggiano's for several reasons. First, I want to try something from the classic pasta section so I can check out the take home for later portion offered on the menu. Secondly, I want to try the impressive wine list but being that I am pregnant and the husband had to work after dinner, neither one of us was able to partake.

It was New Years Eve. I had just been dumped. The heater in my teeny studio apartment had a gas leak and was filling up the place with carbon monoxide. These were definitely the worst of times. The last thing I wanted to do was go to the Clermont. The only thing that got me out of the house was the fact that my brother's band was playing and the promise of heat. So, I drove the 3 blocks to the Clermont. (Yeah I drove 3 blocks - that's what people do in Atlanta.) It was packed in there that night. The ceilings felt too low and there was definitely plenty of heat. I was not in the mood for these shiny, happy people. I found myself a spot on the ledge across from the stage where I would sit and watch the band, not talking to anyone but my brother and his friends. At some point during the night, this guy appeared seemingly from nowhere and sat beside me on the ledge. Being the Southerners that we are, we got to talking and became fast friends. Throughout the night, I could see my brother giving him the evil eye from the stage - who is this guy and why is he chatting up my sister? "Ignore him", I said, "he's overly protective due to our lack of parental guidance as kids." The night went on, the music was awesome, and the company was great. Once we were several hours into the new year, my new friend and I exchanged email addresses and went our separate ways. Then there I was back at my place with no heat, trying to comfort myself with thoughts of this kind stranger. Days went by, weeks went by and still no word from him. Who was this boy with the fancy-sounding name and where had he gone? Finally, a month later, there he was in my inbox. Many years later and over 2500 miles apart, we are still friends. The place is depressing, the strippers are ugly, but you will always have something to talk about with a cute stranger.

I am so torn. I want to hate Popscene, and I kind of do. It's SO crowded, with 8 million babykids, and it's hard to get a drink at the bar. But then they always have really good bands and play really good music. Could you like, be a little less popular so I might be inclined to go more often? I spent a Thanksgiving night there when I made out with a gay guy. That was fun.
