by Julie B. on Not the greatest nightclub, BUT great place to watch a game. I came here last year for the Rose Bowl to watch Penn State with some visiting alumni. It was crowded. but we got a table to fit all 5 of us. Our waitress was spot on. What made this place stand out to me was the following.... Some drunk fool at the table next to us dropped his beer. sending his beverage and shards of glass directly into our nachos. Shit happens. We told our waitress and she offered to bring us a fresh batch which came out within a few minutes. Not only that, but a manager checked on us AND a week later we noticed our entire tab had been taken care of. Considering we spent the entire evening there drinking pitchers of Blue Moon, I was very impressed. I think people need to lay off the criticism and take this place for what it is: a sports/college bar. You can dress it up and add techno music all you want, but it will not transform into a nightclub.
by Erik Z. on Hands-down, the Middlesex Lounge is the best thing to happen to Greater Boston since my 1997 arrival. Like any other joint north or south of the river, however: timing is everything (i.e., some nights' crowds and music are better than others). Namely, the regulars that frequent off-peak Tuesdays (whether it's the electro of "Hearthrob" or the dark, grimey beats of DJ UFO's "Leggo Dub") and Thursdays (invariably forward-thinking electronic dance music in the form of "Make It New") are personal favorites. Certainly you'll often find folks well- and sometimes (gasp!) fashionably-dressed (I suppose in some minds that makes them Euro; I think it makes 'em more interesting to look at and the night more fun than hanging with a bunch of Chads rockin' A&F flannel and backwards BoSox ballcaps) - regardless: there's no velvety-roped dress code - so come as you are and appreciate the fact that on Tuesday and Thursday nights there isn't a more welcoming crowd (or hosts) in town. Other benefits include: * Fairly laissez faire doormen (compare/contrast that of the Enormous Room, etc.); * Very reasonable drink prices; * Extremely generous bartenders (tell me those aren't the stiffest Vodka Tonics you've had...ever); and, * The three best bathrooms this side of Audubon Circle (and maybe Om). EZ'S EAZE OF USE TIP: Approach the waitress(es) for your drink. The bartenders tend to get bogged down with the frequently three-deep crowd angling for a spot at the countertop.
