by Catherine L. on This place is always hot and cold, from the crowd, service and menu - the only consistently good items here are their beer specials (and selections!) and the killer veggie burger. Like Eulogy, Beneluxx and Society Hill Hotel, National Mechanics is the only other do-able (and tolerable) bar for me in terms of going out in Old City. With halfway decent music (depending on the DJ) and a halfway decent crowd (depending on the night), it's a good place to get your drink on. As for eats, it's nothing to beg for continuous returns but I'd say to come back for brunch or lunch when the service is a bit less hurried and more attentive. I am always tempted to steal one of their Philly-centric character pint glasses (love those!), and I dig the building itself and its décor (creepy-crawler collectibles meets church lady) - although the place is in dire need of more restrooms. After different incarnations of bars at this address (remember Coyote Ugly? ugh!), National Mechanics has been one of the better (and in recent years, longer) tenants to date. I hope they're here to stay.
by Shellie R. on I came here for drinks after eating somwhere else. We went on a Frdiay night and it was so crowded, but super fun. It is kind of dark but it's all part of the scene. I have also seen this plcAe in tha daylight with lights on and I love the decor. Drinks were awesome and the service was great. I haven't eaten here so I cannot comment on the food, but the drinks were A++ The vibe is great and just an overall good time. I plan on eating here soon because the food area was full so there musr be something to it. Parking is so so, but you can always find a place to park on teh street and hoof it.
