by Cassi Dunkinson on Simply awful. I wanted to order dinner, but after an hour and forty five minutes of sitting at the bar staring at my empty appetizer plate and empty drink while the bartender drank his drink and texted, I decided it wasn't meant to be. I mean, I'm at the bar, it's Monday night, I'm two feet away from you, dude. And it's making me thirsty watching you drink.
by Shu Saballos on I didn't even know this place existed before! It is in the middle of nowhere so there is plenty of parking. I was kind of annoyed the guy at the door wanted to charge me and my friend (who is also a girl) $10 since we came six minutes after 10:30p after I was told it was free if you had one of the only two tables they have available. The guy trying to charge us was pretty immature, "This is my party and I get to charge what I want" until some girl that worked there told him that was not true. Anyway, that was so annoying. Other than that, this place reminds me of Cardiff in Campbell. Has a dance floor, but used for space where people are crammed in with a drink in one hand and trying to move to the beat (sort of). It's like a standing room only bar. The staff/bouncer are nice and the decor was pretty cool (furry circular japanese lanterns that turn diff colors, free photobooth, princess bathroom). The guy's bathroom has a one-way mirror that looks out to the club so beware!
by Chris D. on This review is for Tuesday nights with DJ Romeo Cologne. I love funk, and I love to shake my ample ass. I love new funk (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings) and old funk (James Brown, Curtis Mayfield). So, Tuesday nights at The Star Bar sounds like a great choice, right? Hmmm, not so much. First, the event shouldn't be called "DJ Romeo Cologne's Funk Disco Party" (I pulled that from Star Bar's website). It should be called DJ Quasi's (I think that's his name) Funk Hip Hop Top 40 Party with Special Guest Romeo Cologne." Romeo didn't hit the CD changer until 1:15 AM(last call is at 2:30). Is it really his night if the "opener" spins for 3 hours and he does less than two? I've NEVER been to a concert where the opener performed longer than the headliner. The second problem is Quasi's song selection. Ya see, I went to The Star Bar for funk. I walked in the bar around 11:15. He played decent music for about 30 minutes. Then it went to shit. Can someone tell me what is funky about Madonna's "Hey Mr. DJ"? No shit, he really played that song. He was also playing recent hip hop and other assorted bullshit. I was waiting for him to play Ice Ice Baby. This went on till Romeo took over. Romeo started with Disco Lady(Johnnie Taylor), followed it up with Shining Star (Earth, Wind, and Fire), and some decent funk I wasn't familiar with. I left after his third song. Ok, here's the money shot: Now, if I wanted to hear Hey Mr. DJ or Who Let the Dogs Out (no, he didn't play that song) I could have found a club in the burbs. So if you are looking for real funk, avoid Tuesdays at The Star Bar (or don't show up till 1:30). If you live close and want to dance, it's not a bad option. Just don't expect to hear much funk. And to think I was really looking forward to spending some time at The Star Bar (I had my first Funk Disco Party about 10 years ago, and it was a blast). Who knows, maybe Romeo will take it back over and it'll be good again. Oh yeah! Someone drop me a line and let me know if Saturday nights at The Cleremont Lounge are the same setup. I want to go, but not if I have to hear fucking Madonna.
