When emo kids pretend to be punk this is where they hang out. Seriously though, the place was pretty disappointing. I listen to all types of music, so I'm not complaining because of the style of music. First of all, I got this look from everyone as though I shouldn't be there. But seriously, what were those little twerps going to do about it? Second, the drink selection was pretty weak (that's important to me). And there was a cover charge, even though the band was not worth the money. I'm all about hole in the wall places that cater to certain crowds, nothing wrong with that. But I've seen much better.

So being European, I am *very* picky about clubs... (You might ask why, given that, I'm living in Boston... but that's a whole other story). Anyways, went to Avenue on Saturday night. My friend had a table and we had about a 10:1 girl:guy ratio, so we avoided all teh door hassle described in other reviews but which I have no doubt exists, given it still took us about 15 minutes to get in. When we entered I was struck by how small the space is... I guess this is typical for NY clubs, but I'm used toe the Europe mega clubs so it really struck me. There are 2 floors: top floor (where we were sitting and which is apparently less "cool", oh well) is more loungy, the bottom is more clubby. Loved the decor and atmosphere and the way they've used the space: it's almost boudoir-esque with a hint of decadence. We had a great night: the service was good, the drinks were obviously extortionate, but that's just to be expected, and we managed to get in a lot of dancing. Points to Avenue for not making me get down when I stood on the sofa and started dancing... Also, I loved teh handy coat storage area at teh back of the tables - when I want to go, I want to go and not get stuck in a giant coat check line. 2 big complaints though: 1) The DJ and sound system was awful. The bass was just too high and being near the speakers was really unpleasant, and it made the sound quality really bad. The mixing was average to poor for what I'd expect from this caliber of club and the music was a little too top 40 mixed with weird random songs from the 60s (which, hey, I'm cool with something different but it just didn't work in this environment). 2) The bathroom set-up was kind of annoying and weird... you had to wait for an individual room and they were unisex. The line was heavily policed by a bouncer (which I guess at least means they keep them clean). But it made the wait long, seemed unnecessary given the space restrictions and meant it was difficult to chat with your frrends while you re-did lipstick etc (allthough that was tricky given there was NO light) unless you watched each other pee- which is just not my scene. So overall, we had a good night, but there could be some improvement, particularly on the DJing front.
