I have tried this place 3X. Each time I have ordered a different thing. Each time my food was covered in icky SUPER sweet brown sauce. Unless you are a sugar fiend, I don't know why anyone would ever go here for the food. I am ashamed that I tried it even once. But I thought last time "how can they make a "hot and Spicy" dish badly" well, they did. Not hot. Not spicy. Extremely Sweet. Healthy? Not when you are eating 3 tablespoons of sugar on your meal.

I really liked the atmosphere as we walked in: buzzing but not too loud, soft mood lighting that wasn't too dark, and it smelled amazing. (although I was starving...) The only annoying thing was that there wasn't really anywhere to stand at the front host stand so we were sort of in the doorway. If it hadn't been raining, we probably could have hung out outside, which would've been fine on a nice night. We were seated in just a few minutes; surprising to me considering it was during Midtown Restaurant Week. We sat upstairs and were greeted quickly by a friendly waiter who I thought provided attentive service. We all chose from the Restaurant Week menu which didn't have any of my usual (read: plain) go-to items like chicken and pasta or a grilled chicken salad, but they did have honey glazed fried chicken, so I thought I would branch out. In order, I got a Drunken Palmer cocktail, the corn bisque, fried chicken, and chocolate bread pudding. My drink was delicious, very sweet and in a tall glass, definitely a good way to shake off the stress of a day. It had a little more of a tea taste than I like but the lemonade helped to temper that. I'm not really a huge corn fan since it gets stuck in my teeth so I liked that the soup was pureed and the flavor of corn was mixed with creme fraiche for a mild sweet soup. I had a bite of the other appetizer option, the pork crepe, and it was fantastic too. There were two main course options, the fried chicken and pasta with mussels/some other seafood. The fried chicken was delicious except that it was slightly crispy. It had great flavor though and there were two decent-sized pieces. Perfect amount for a main course to avoid having to take some home. (I'm not much for leftovers.) The bread pudding was made perfectly, spongy and not too sweet but was just too chocolatey for me. There was only one dessert option though, so it was that or nothing. All in all, SCK was great and I'd definitely go back, except next time I'd get a few different dishes to see how they handle some other southern staples.

Hmmmm, I am by no means a hipster or ever one to see and be seen, but I have had a lot of fun the small handful of times I've gone here whether for a live show, SXSW party, or DJ and dancing. My first experience with the Beauty Bar was the one in LA, which seemed much smaller and more low-key than this one. I actually did get my nails done there. But Austin's has the same spirit, except with brighter walls (pink glitter, yay!) and a photo booth (yay!). Maybe the drinks were so strong I stopped caring that I was surrounded by hipsters and it was pretentious, but I really don't think so. I genuinely had fun, and although it's not in my regular rotation, I'd go shake my booty here again.
