Maybe if I was a 21 year old college girl or on the prowl for some guy to take home with me the same night I meet him I could appreciate Woody's more. Alas, I am neither of those. I am simply looking for a place to hang out with some friends, watch a game on tv, have a couple of drinks and maybe dinner. Apparently, this is too much to ask from Woody's. First off, parking in Royal Oak is always a pain. I think this is why I've become such a fan of Clawson, not only because I live there, but because parking is free and plentiful. That aside, last night I had to show ID at 6:30pm! WTF? A bouncer sitting outside while a 3 year old was happily munching on fries inside. Since when did 6:30 turn into the new going out clubbing time? Once inside, I met up with my group of friends. We were on the first floor, sitting right next to the waitress station area, so you'd think people would always be coming over to help us, right? WRONG. Everyone had to go up to the bar for their drinks, and finally, after 30 minutes, I walked up to a waitress and asked who ours was and she said "whoever gets there first, what do you need?" and I said "well, there are 9 people over there that want to order food and no one has come to our table once". Several minutes later, menus finally came, and we had to flag down someone yet again to place our order. But drinks? Forget about it, we got quicker service at the packed bar. Finally, food eaten, drinks drank, we were waiting for our bill. I finally got tired of it and, thankfully, having remembered how much mine cost, put down money for my portion and left. People were still waiting for the bill, and it would be very easy to just walk out, one by one, without paying. I probably would have had I not thought karma would get me later. They do make a good bar pizza though, that's about all they've got going for them.

This review is only for the downstairs "nightclub". By far this one of the worst nightclubs I've ever been to. And I've been to some horrible ones. I understand there's no cover charge here, but sometimes you get what pay for. I have a friend that for some reason loves this place. I think it's that free thing I was just discussing. Anyway this place looks like something that someone just threw together in their basement. The drinks are very watered down and very overpriced. The music I guess wasn't too bad, but for me I would have preferred more variety. What's the crowd like? Well the last time I was there was a woman dancing on the floor barefoot. And remember the place had an older crowd. This place just wasn't my scene.

For me, this place has been hit or miss. It's all a matter of what type of crowd is there on any particular night and what you are into. Some nights, the place is great, with a decent mix of people and good music, while on other nights it's frat boy city. The last time I went to Jake's, my friend and I left after 10 minutes because we became so aggravated with the extremely loud, rude, and obnoxious college meathead/bimbo crowd-- after being blatantly shoved and pushed out of the way by the 4th or 5th drunk guy in a row, we decided it was time to get out of there. Asides from the sort of unfortunate people JD attracts, it's a fun bar-- good decor and atmosphere, good music, good bartenders (if you can actually get close to the bar) and some great deals ($2 drinks for fine ladies like myself on Wednesdays).
