It's better than Delilah's in terms of fried chicken and mac and cheese, that's for sure. The prices were pretty high for soul food, but I guess that's part of the deal here. The tropical iced tea was great, but you're going to want some water as well, since its sweetness is not particularly thirst-quenching or hydrating. My dinner also came with collard greens, so if one were to compare all this to my ideal last meal, you're coming pretty close. We had an amazing waiter (can't remember his name but he was from MD), and my friend's chicken and waffles were good. I wish I had known that the restaurant was BYOB; I presumed that since there was a nightclub next door under the same management, the booze would be flowing. I'll come prepared next time, along with an empty stomach. All in all, Ms. Tootsie's is pretty close to the tastes of home, which is a huge plus.

I am a huge comedy fan and have to admit, Improv remains by far one of my favorite joints in the city.  Love the location on Melrose which is surrounded by ample street parking.  The space itself is intimate yet holds a good # of people.  Each time I go there I am bound to see some of my favorite comics, from up-and-comers to established.  And it seems to be a regular haunt for Last Comic Standing winners, alumni, and the like. Last night's Joe Rogan 20th Anniversary show further solidified my impression.  The 'security' guys can be a bit bossy at times but only because they effectively 'keep the order' - they clear each show out and prep for the next quickly, and seat promptly. Our first time there, we decided last minute to opt for the later show since we arrived minutes after our intended 8pm showtime.  The guy manning the door was hospitable and convinced us to have dinner there.  Expecting the night would cost an arm and a leg between dinner and drink minimums, we were pleasantly surprised to discover quite the opposite - apps are under $10, entrees are just over, and drinks were not outrageous like at some other places. Also note if you order an entree, it waives the minimum...though what's a show without drinks!  You also get preferential seating privileges - someone comes by and assigns you your preferred area for the show while you eat. Awesome place to enjoy comedy and not feel violated...by unfunny pricing OR comics.

Well after having spent many evenings at Yoshi's in Oakland we had an opportunity to attend the opening of Yoshi's SF last night. The show was great, Roy Haynes, Kenny Garrett, Ravi Coltrane, Gary Burton, John Patituci, Nick Payton and Dave Kikoshi were fantastic. Great energy. We tried to get them back out for an encore but it didn't happen. I'll assume this had to do with the late start for the 8PM set and the crowd waiting for the 10PM set. That was cool. There were a few opening night issues that I'm sure will be worked out. The venue itself was very nice but I have to admit I like my jazz clubs a bit more seasoned. :) This will take time. It was too polished but it will probably do quite well because of it. I had the same feeling about Yoshi's-OAK when they moved from Claremont to Jack London Square but it has seasoned well. We were right at the stage so the sound was great (although I would have  liked a bit more of Patituci's bass represented). The food and drink were fine. We ate sushi and drank wine during the show. It was all good. I was starving so the sushi didn't last long and I can't remember what we ordered. It took awhile to get the food served and getting the check after the show was slow. They were trying to clear the room for the next show but we couldn't leave until we got our credit card back. We were in no hurry so it was more amusing than annoying. It gave us a chance to chat with the other folks waiting around and a couple of the musicians. When we walked out to the lounge the line for the 10PM show was almost out the door. Yoshi's was pretty crowded at that point but it didn't seem claustrophobic. I like Yoshi's-SF but Yoshi's-OAK is still my favorite. I can see going over to the SF spot once in awhile and probably will to see how it seasons. The OAK spot is home baby! While we were in the area we strolled into 1300 Fillmore and took a look around. Wow, very nice! Something was definitely smelling good from the kitchen! Have to get back there. We also got a quick tour of the Jazz Heritage Museum. My dear friend Gary has a  Roy Haynes photo showing there so Peter gave us a quick tour.  Great sculptures, paintings and photos. They're having a community day this Saturday. Worth checking out. I haven't been to the Fillmore in years. I like the new additions to it but I hope it keeps some of it's old flava too.
