This is late and long overdue. This venue as well as the Oakland site are great. I have never eaten at either, just gone for the music since I have lived in the bay area for over 14 years. Great bands get booked here, it is cozy, great sound, small, you can sit very close to the band, there are servers throughout the show... Oh, and I cannot tell you how many great bands I have seen here. From jazz to funk to classical- It is very worth paying a bit extra for a reserved seat. It is interesting to hear how folks have not heard of or been to either location. They have a great web site and calendar of events, and an e mail list. I go to shows a lot alone, and it is single person friendly. Overall great venue.

No thanks! I came here with a group of people (Mostly girls) for a friends birthday and I tell you now that was most likely the first AND last time I ever come here. We arrived at a decent time knowing the head promoter and with intention of getting a table and a bottle yet still had a ridiculous time getting in. Security here is some of the WORST I have ever come in contact with in LA. If you want to see your stereotypical "I got picked on when I was a kid and now I'm gonna take it out on the world" security staff then here it is. The guys were yelling and screaming, being rude and semi- aggressive all for the sake of clearing 8 people from the sidewalk. That being said once we got through the hassle and ordeal of getting inside my hopes were once again shot down. apparently we were going to the club on the 3rd floor and had to take the stairs the whole way. Now I didn't mind so much but I wouldn't say that's for everyone (I'm assuming there is a handicap accessible entrance somewhere). Once inside the decor was in my opinion pretty cool. Dark red decor with a massive chandelier. Table size was good and spacious. Bottle service was pretty weak also... We were never checked on once with exception to when one of the bussers came by to take away some of our empties. We ended up buying drinks from the bar the rest of the night. The crowd was typical Hollywood and so was the music. I would agree with a previous reviewer who said this place lacks substance. I know there are also a few different parts of this place so maybe I will try the rooftop club some time and see how it turns out. 3rd floor again ? I think not.

Even though this place is in the Tenderloin and about the size of an average San Francisco Edwardian flat, it's a great place to check out even if you are having a "bad hair day." I have to admit, I had everything going against me when a friend invited me out for Afro Beats night at the 222 Club --- a) I was having a "bad hair day" b) "afro what???" I said to her c) going out on a weekday and having to be at work at 8:30 in the morning the next day is a bad idea for me --- I'll be honest, I'm getting old and an activity like that just generates more bad hair days. d) Granted, it is in the Tenderloin... But what a lovely time I had! --- I have to thank my friend again for dragging my lazy ass out to this place. Don't pass up the pizza, it's quite tasty for the fact that they actually cook it up in a small convection oven right behind the bar! We had people swarming around us like flies, "ooh what's that..." as the bartender dished it out for us. Seriously, we started a trend in there that night and soon found others ordering it up at the bar. Lastly, the place is quite historical from what the door guy said to me as I handed him my 5 bucks. That just set the mood right for me for the evening, since I was a history major in college. Did I have it written on my forehead? Why did he say that specifically to me and not someone else? --- maybe he just says that to all the girls... Dunno. But then my mind started racing as I looked around... the amount of brick in that place literally screams out pre-1906 as one considers the retrofit black beams installed across the bar room area, a brick wall just across from the bar, and as you descend into the basement area, you enter through an arched brick entryway --- with more brick walls! How long could this building have been here? I wondered as I said my goodnights and called it a night. On my way home, reminiscing on an excellent evening, I could also imagine the many dark and smoky speakeasy nights of the 1920s.
