When this place first opened, I was impressed. The food was of excellent quality, the fries were I believe the best I had tasted anywhere, everything seemed fresh, and the wait staff was impeccable. However now, as with many successful openings of restaurants, they continue to slide down the scale into the land of mediocre. The host staff is in general less than welcoming and have an attitude like they don't really want your business. The waitstaff in general is lax in arriving at the table and with refills. The food in general is less than what it once was. The fries that once were my favorite anywhere... every one being crisp as the las,t are now hit or miss. The po-boyger that was my favorite is now just slopped together. It is amazing when people such as myself are having horrible service and the management staff is wandering around checking improvements in the decor or structure they want to make... what really is more important? Umm, the customer experience! Sorry, lacking...

This is a fantastic venue. It was built after the 1906 earthquake, and it appears the interior hasn't been redone since then. It's very ornate - lots of plaster moulding and Parisian-style mirrors. There is table seating and a dance floor with a bar at the back. It's a pretty small venue - way smaller than the Fillmore Theater and way nicer. The drinks were strong and the show that we saw (Cajun dancing with a friend from New Orleans) was really fun.

My friend came here in 1996 and recommended me to visit this place for my first trip to NY, and when I entered this room and heard people speak their own rhythms and their own rhymes, mingling with live hip hop / jazz my heart sank. The vibe was clear- we were all unique individuals unifying in a room with heartfelt creative soul. I felt incredibly motivated and inspired, and I can't wait to find places like this on the west coast.
