A friend who attended UT (University of Texas) recommended this place to me. She told me exactly what to try and her favorites. You can't go to Texas without having some Tex-Mex although this place also serves American dishes. I just had to try the Mexican Martini. Apparently, this place is well-known for this drink and they limit you to two of these drinks since it is supposedly so strong. Every table had this drink. I lucked out and happened to come on the right day, Monday, when they have a $5 special on this drink. Yeah, the drink was good and stiff and I enjoyed it. I also had the Stuffed Avocado. It was a unique fried concoction filled with cheese, chicken, and lots of avocado. It tasted good. The dish came with rice and choice of type of beans. The staff all looked like they are students from UT. Ah, to be that young again...

Harry Denton's Starlight Room is the epitome of San Francisco class and style. It's in a historic penthouse with a Zen garden, and the staff is incredible. The clientele is varied - usually hotel guests and tourists, but there are some private soirees that rock the house sometimes. The view is awesome and the food is dependably good. My only complaint is that perhaps it's a bit too rich. I'm gettin' old. I have been to the Starlight Room three times, once for a private party. I am determined to go more often, as I only live a couple of blocks from it. I had a chance to meet Mr. Denton once. It affirmed to me that this place deserves its reputation - people like Harry are the soul of this town.

I realize that I've been giving out a lot of good reviews lately. I don't like that about myself, but I guess I just don't bother to write reviews of places I don't like. This will soon change though, I promise. In the mean time, Bob Bar is amazing! It's only detractions are made up for by how great it is. I mean, five stars equals "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" not "Perfect, absolutely nothing wrong". And by no means is Bob Bar perfect. It is small and... and... well that's about it. The bar space is small, the bathroom is tiny (the co-ed sink is outside the bathroom), the whole place is on the small side, ok? However, where else can you find a place in Manhattan that spins music like this? Good Hip-Hop (old and new), Reggae, Dancehall, Pop and R&B. Everyone here seemed to be having a good time despite the size. Even though the bar was small, whenever I wanted a drink I got one in a very reasonable amount of time. A cute bartender never hurts either. The inside decor is subtle but pleasing and it's easy to get to (right off the F) and in good spot to flag a cab for that drunken ride home. All in all, Bob Bar is the best Hip-Hop spot I've been to thus far in NYC.
