Examples: * If you say you're going to open the doors at 7, then you'd better not open the doors at 8, and blame the bands for this. They're your doors, the bands do not control them. I completely understand if the show starts late, that's fine. But don't make people wait out in the cold for no reason. * The "Save DNA Lounge fund" seems a bit shady. DNA Lounge is a for-profit club. A nightclub serving $8 mixed drinks isn't exactly PBS or NPR. Can't you guys support yourselves? And whatever happened to all that dotcom money of yours, Jamie? I mean, you even got a quote in the Unix Haters Handbook. Don't you get royalties every time someone download that? (Okay, I'm kidding about that last part, but still.) * The security here sucks. How many venues are there where the singer of the headlining band gets rammed off the stage by some idiot in the audience? I didn't even like the band, but I thought they deserved better treatment than that. To top it all off, the "security" had a hell of a time finding the guy after it happened. Well all that said, I still love coming here for the music. I just wish it were run a bit more professionally sometimes. Is that so much to ask for?
by Woodrow Gelber on Right now, I would say 1oak is probably the best "club" out there. I have only been on Wednesdays and the ppl who work there say Friday is their busiest night. If you can get past the door, it is definitely worth it. I recommend going on a Wednesday - Jesse Marco DJs and hes pretty damn good. It's a good crowd - a good mix of ppl...I have run in to a few celebs there as well.....
by Stella C. on Ok, I have been to Vanguard quite a few times, but I think I have had about enough. My friend got screwed over at the bar - he ordered 4 drinks and they charged him for 8 on his card PLUS the gratuity - the reason? They said they were "doubles" - I think not. Besides the $40 minimum tab - not hard. The drinks are 11 and 12 bucks if you are getting cocktails - and they add a very nice tip for themselves in there. It goes quickly. If you put your card down - you forget about the pain - the drinks are made pretty strong (but beware of "doubles"). The crowd was good until about 2am when somebody put a belligerence tab in what was left of everybody's drinks. I have been out listening to this kind of music (trance, house, and etc) and I have never seen a crowd get this kind of mean. Pushing and shoving and elbows in the back, sides, etc. People staring other people down - and threats of violence. I had more hair in flipped in my face here than I would have had I gone to a strip club instead. My boyfriend nearly got into a fight for standing in the wrong place. A bunch of prsn guys were practically shoving people out of the way so that they and their buddies could admire their slutty girlfriends humping the speaker. Smells like Polo, BO, and dirty vajayjay in here. Bouncers? Maybe if you are in the walkway - or if you have something they want - like Hollywood connections. The music was brilliant - which is the ONLY reason I would ever dream of going here - John Digweed on this particular evening if you are curious. And the reason for the second star. And at this moment I would never go again. And it would take some sort of miraculous event to convince me it is worth it to go again. It is a club well past it's prime in terms of environs and the people going here and Avalon are just rude (if you go you know EXACTLY what I am talking about). I miss Spundae at Circus.
