by Patricia S. on Blue Note is kind of awful :-/ It's a tourist trap and relying on it's old reputation as a jazz mecca. Blue Note clearly overbooks itself with sold out shows that make the paying crowd uncomfortable and hot. They have an idiotic door policy similar to a Meatpacking District club. (not at all my scene) People who have tickets and/or have made reservations have to wait outside, even if there's no show before them and the place is not yet full. The tables are far too close together making it difficult to go to the bathroom and for the serving staff to get to you. Also, you are probably going to end up sharing your table with strangers. A table of 4 will seat 6 somehow. The venue itself looks a little old and rundown. The mirror covering one wall makes it easier to see no matter where you sit but it makes the venue look cheap. The cocktails are severely overpriced (don't they make enough money by overselling their venue?) and the service staff are NOT NICE when you decide you're only going to buy the minimum number of drinks. From the drink special, no less. And no food. Steer clear if you can help it. If there's an artist that you're dying to see, check their schedule, because I bet they're playing elsewhere on another night. If not, go see them anyway, but be warned.
by Pumpkin T. on I stumbeled into Back Fence this week after a long time away, and gosh, well I was reminded instantly of how much this place RULES. It is a dive, a bar with probably 10 seats and somewhere around 20 or 30 tables with waiter service. The place has an overall musty-sawdust feel to it. Each table and a few positions at the bar have bowls filled with salted peanuts. The peanuts go perfect with your whiskey or beer that you're throwing back, and when at the Back Fence, one is encouraged to spit the peanut shells on the floor. The next item of business to discuss is the music. This place has a different band (either 1 or 2 man) that plays nightly. They serve up classic rock covers and it's completely appropriate (or maybe I am just always drunk) to yell out suggestions like, "PEARL JAM!" or "VAN MORRISON!" Weekends there is a cover ($5) but weeknights it is a lot less crowded and still a great amount of entertainment. It feels like a honky tonk, so don't be suprised by the pin stripped Wall Streeters that frequent the 'Fence. If you're typically not into a bar with a lot of hyper-masucline Finance guys, think again and give this place a shot. Before you know it, you're all singing at the top of your lungs to "Free Falling" and asking each other why you don't come here every week.
