by Jeraldine Tannehill on The issue is neither with the band (Bonobo-which was awesome), nor the sound system (which was also stellar), but with the venue itself. First, you spend an hour in line EVEN IF you have tickets already. Second of all, the headliners did not come on until 1130 and barely played two hours. We saw the opening act longer than Bonobo. Third, they oversold, which means we were crammed to the point of utter discomfort. It's not that bad even in Paris. Lastly, I tried to see Bonobo a while ago (4/23/2010) and they advertised 100 tickets sold at the door, before turning everyone away at 930, after we had waited in line for an hour. It's really hit or miss, the hit is ok, but the miss is nightmarish. Avoid this place unless you absolutely love the band.
by Gracie Berrio on Bruno's is one of the few bars that's on Mission where the drinks aren't overtly expensive and the crowd of people is a good mix of guys and girls. There's a $10 cover after 10pm, but I usually get into this place before then to avoid that. Depending on their night, there's usually a special drink available at a special price under $10, though I usually just order light drinks and something fruity for my guests. The staff and bartenders were nice and helpful. There's about 4 bars in the place, with 2 dance floors, and plenty of tables. There's a loopy staircase that you should watch out for in this place, especially for those who had too many to drink that night (on a side note, if you had too much to drink, please do NOT drive and drop a few bucks on the cab!) If you guys are lucky, there's a hot dog cart with fresh and hot hot dogs for you if you're hungry right after exiting this place, though I cannot guarantee the cart will be there every night. Overall, the only drawbacks I can think of are: parking can be tough in the Mission, the surrounding area is not as vibrant as downtown nor the Marina, and the $10 cover may annoy some of you. If you don't mind any of that, try this place on a Friday or Saturday night!
by amy j. on This is probably my favourite place to see bands. It's a tiny, intimate venue so you can feel the vibration of the drums no matter where you choose to sit or stand. I love the checker board floor. Best of all, it's in a good area, right in North Beach so you can grab some high quality Italian food before seeing your band rock the stage. I've been here on many occasions and I've never had a problem finding a decent spot to see a band. A lot of British bands like playing here which makes it that much cooler in my opinion. It has a classy, 1920's feel to it. If you don't feel like standing, there are a couple of tables where you can sit and have a cocktail. Last time I went, the band walked off the stage and you could chat with them as the roadies put their equipment away.
