El Rio is sort of a weird laidback neighborhood "gay" bar with pantamorphic patrons that are mostly straight, a bar area that is seedy in a fun way (although the restrooms are totally, unforgivably skanky), the live bands are primarily rock bands, and the music you hear playing ranges from 80s big hair rock bands to Purple Rain era Prince. You won't hear any Lady Gaga or Britney Spears here. I guess it's considered a gay bar because they have a gay flag flying in the back patio and every one seems gay friendly and accepting. They have $2 well specials whose quality ranges depending on who the bartender is. We were drinking whiskey sodas. Sometimes our drinks were mostly soda with a whisper of whiskey. Other times they were whiskey with a kiss of soda. At two bucks a pop you can't complain and after 4 or 5 of these suckers kicks in, who cares? The best part of the place is the back patio which feels like you're in the backyard at someone's house party than in a bar. My partner and I both remarked about this and later in the evening I heard some one else say the same. It's lush with palm trees, a lemon tree, a barbeque grill, a patio area, seating areas in little nooks and crannies, and plenty of heat lamps although the night was pretty warm for a March evening in San Fran. There was a girl walking around with her black lab puppy. There was a group at a patio table who ordered pizza. Seriously. The delivery guy comes into the patio area with four pizzas and an order of hot wings. All of us wondered why Seattle doesn't have a place as cool as this. Then we remembered, it's Seattle we're talking about. The one thing I can say that really sucked is the patrons aren't very supportive of out-of-town bands. My partner and I were there to support our friends and seriously the room cleared out when they got on stage and the only people there were me and my partner, a half dozen friends who live in the city, and two locals who were more interested in groping each other than actually listening to the band. I know my opinion is biased because they're my friends and all, but they were the best group out of the line up and they really rocked the house. The opener was some maudlin Ani DiFranco wannabe lesbian folk singer and the closing band was a weird rock band with a Mama Cass look-a-like lead singer and a male back up singer who sang as if he was in a death metal band. Really weird. Overall a pretty cool place to hang out.

My mom and I came in for dinner before an event and were very pleased. The sushi was good, both the Rock 'N Roll and the sashimi, but the real winner was the Kobe-style beef burger with fries. The burger was simply AMAZING and the fries were perfect! A combination of regular and sweet potato fries, both cooked to perfection and delicious. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was very classy. I'm definitely going to be watching for good opportunities to return!
