$5 for the band space in back but free for the sports bar in front. kinda confused by this place. not sure what the ideal identity it wants to be known for but it worked for the simple reason of wanting to get a drink to pass time. Didnt go to the back for the band b/c my friend who lives here said she never heard of em. Stayed in the front area and just got a drink. Not memorable enough to want to stay for a 2nd round. Im sure its all good for the locals/dive folks but not for out of towners lookin to get into something more lively...

After nearly a year of hype, a recent visit to friends living in San Francisco meant we had to hit DNA. I could only hope it might come close to my expectations. (Slimelight in London has left all clubs a hard-pressed for a good comparison.) Luckily I can say it did and more. The layout is nicely done with a main stage and dance floor and two stairways up to the lofted level, chill-out rooms and second dance floor. Meat Vs. Death Guild gave me everything I needed in dance-y glee. It's the type of club and club goers I'd really love to see in Chicago. Especially the chill-out room which seems to be rare in my big mid-west town. I need to give big kudos to a number of the staff at DNA as well. The coat check guy saved my life... ok, our coats, as I managed to run off without either of my check tickets in order to dance to a song. It was probably about an hour later before I realized and went back in fear. Luckily he'd kept them nice and safe and handed the tickets to me without my even having to ask, the hat might have made me recognizable... but still... nice considering the sign said tough wait till we close. The Absinthe bar was superbly accommodating and the bartender didn't judge when I told him I preferred to have Absinthe luged with Red Bull. Yes. Instead he ran and got me one, and not just faux Red Bull (If your energy drink is on tap, it's not Bull) and not just regular Red Bull, the have Sugar Free RB. Paying a completely reasonable price just made him and my drink even better. I can't wait to visit SF again and I will be at DNA when I do. Hopefully next time I'll be there for the Hubba Hubba Review. I've seen plenty of photos and video for and can't wait to see one of their great shows.

Everyone raves about National Mechanics. I've been twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The food is decent but not amazing, and if you are a beer drinker (which I am not - probably why much of the charm is lost on me) they have a nice and reasonably priced beer selection. The music is loud, this is not a quiet sit and talk place. I'm sure I'll be back there sooner or later. The best crowd description, my friend noted, "hipsters with jobs".
