by Mary P. on The Sound of Money: Riveted at Rivington - an evening at The Box Had an interesting Saturday night at The Box recently, helped largely in part that the drinks bill was funded by acquaintances with money to splash around. And even so I was outraged at the price of a bottle of champagne - even for New York City! No wait at door due to members in our party having an 'in' with Mr.H, part-owner and partner along with that yummy thespian Mr. L. Take earplugs or you'll risk low-moderate hearing loss. It's a smelly, stand-up (if you don't get allocated a booth to the left), zoo of a place. The show, a peppy mixture of peep show and burlesque, moves fast. Miss Narcissister was the main attraction when we went and it was fun to see even the jaws of the jaded drop a tad when she began to disrobe. Without spoiling it for you, this is what I call travelling light!! And considering that even lowly Spirit Airlines now has a fee for Carry-On's ($30.00), one can even evny Ms. Narsisster's singular mode of packing a complete wardrobe. After the initial frisson, I gave myself over to the moment, suspended all judgement and went with the flow. (Auditions and subsequent rehearsals must've been fascinating in retrospect). Don't bother with the food. They get you liquored up like any place of its kind and whatever food/snack you order WILL, in the light of an alcohol-fuelled haze, seem like dinner at Le Bernardin. Did I mention the drinks were outrageously expensive? Hopefully someone else is paying or the whole evening is expensed away. Interesting concept for a club, Messrs. Hammerstein and Co. The interior architectural layout of The Box would be nice to see by daylight what with the Moorish balconies and decor: it's amazing how they reconfigured a small space into something resembling an old-fashioned burlesque/ vaudevillian hall. Well done on that score. Couldn't be bothered going again, however.
by donna h. on parking is a bitch, the seats are kinda gross, it gets wayyy too packed... meh... i feel like im too tall when i wear heels because ppl hear are short.. or most of them are.. please just convert to nick's crispy tacos so i can enjoy some fish tacos. i've had fun here before, but mostly because of the company vs the club. and another time that forces me to write more about this place... two stars? because it was here, that i saw [for the first time] a special buddy of mine get reallie f'ed up. oh, i couldn't tell at first, she acted normal, but next thing you know, she's next to me puking out her lungs on this stairway (steps that lead up to the bartop)... "zOMG".. then i have hold her up in the bathroom as she continued [im 5'6, she's almost 5'11.... there was much struggle] me: eww was that your puke too? [bathroom was already gross] girl: noo..... me: um ok... find out later it was definitely her.. she had gone to toyose prior to this debauchery... she passed out in the backseat after we were escorted out by bouncers, as she was unable to stand... then had to be carried to her room.. from the car.. we now like to say it was a test of strength for my younger cousin's bf at the time..
