by April T. on PROS: Location (walking distance from Perimeter Mall, restaurants and I-285/GA-400) CONS: Older W hotel, room decor was BLAND, room wasn't clean, incompetent staff & had trouble checking in. All in all---my stay was BLAH. With some serious fine tuning, this hotel could be a 3-star establishment. I chose this hotel because of the location and because W Hotels scream "FUN", in general! But after my experience here, I highly doubt I'll be back. I stayed here for New Year's Eve and I called days prior to arriving to find out their policy for cash accounts. I always like to pay for my hotel stays in cash, as I've had an experience in the past where a hotel erroneously charged my credit card and I was never able to get back. It also prevents having those "days long" holds on your account! Well when I called and spoke to the clerk, she told me that I would pay for the room upon my departure, but they would need $150 per night for incidentals upon arrival, which was completely fine. I arrived at the hotel around 5pm on New Year's Eve with the EXACT cash for each night's incidentals, expecting a great night and check-in to go pretty smoothly. I was completely WRONG! When I got to the desk, the clerk told me that I needed to pay for the each night upfront, PLUS the $150 per each night incidentals. Needless to say I was irritated because the whole purpose of me calling days before was to prevent this from happening. If this was the policy, fine---but that wasn't what was told to me. Basically she wanted about $850 cash from me at check-in and I had already reached my daily ATM withdrawl limit due to other traveling expenses. Not to mention, it was New Year's Eve and I had already done some serious shopping (lol). Anyway, I explained to her that I had called earlier in the week and if they had just explained what they needed, I could have ensured I had all of the cash with me. It wasn't my fault that the staff was incompetent or poorly trained on their policy. I even spoke with the manager on duty (not the general manager), who was also less than accommodating. FIGURES!!! At that point, I was already running late for a dinner reservation and the fact that it was New Year's Eve, I just couldn't bare to battle it out with the staff. If it were not for the fact that I didn't have time to find another hotel, I would have just left right then. It really put a damper on things and I had just gotten there! It was already ruining my night, so I just let her check me in for ONE night and decided I would just leave the following morning. When I got to the room, it was even more of a disappointment. Not a complete eye sore... but definitely NOT a swanky room you expect from the W hotel chain. Keep in mind, this location is the oldest of the four W Hotels in Atlanta and it really shows. I actually had a SUITE---which came with a full living area and a full kitchen. It was suppose to be one of the "nicer" rooms and although it was VERY spacious, it wasn't anything special at all. The cabinets are quite shabby-looking and they desperately need to change the carpet. The decor throughout the entire room (and the entire hotel for that matter) needs some work and the cocktail/end tables in my living area had sticky drink stains still on them (yikes)! My room was also supposed to come with a dessert & a bottle of champagne---NEVER got the dessert and didn't get the champagne until I mentioned it to them the next morning at check-out. Because I already had a bad taste in my mouth, I left the hotel the very next morning and took my business elsewhere, never to look back. Bottom line, this hotel is NOTHING to rave about (especially when the management is poor and all your staff is not on the same page). If you're willing to shell out $200 a night for a room, I would advise others to try another W location (Buckhead, Midtown or Downtown). This place does have a few perks---i.e. full mini bar, Savu restaurant downstairs (which is a joke), lounge/bar on-site, CD/DVD player, spacious suites, etc---but for what you pay for a night's stay, you expect at least A- service. I think most people would be willing to overlook the age of this particular hotel IF the staff and service was up to par. It's such a disappointment to have planned for a big weekend and to have it ruined by sub-standard management & service. Unacceptable! Lesson learned...
by Van W. on Fun club with cool events. I used to come here more often for Death Guild -- good music, nice crowd, never too crowded. Been here for some other events, 80s night and Bondage a-go-go. The cover is cheap, the drinks are good, and the music is always good. There's always that one guy that is older, has his shirt off (cuz ya know, he wouldn't wanna get it all sweaty) and is dancing with a column. He's harmless and kind of reassuring at this point. Plus, you gotta love places that have little water stations set up for the stompy stompy dancing.
