by Ellen Sue C. on Last minute bachelorette party plans? We ended up hitting up my friend who happened to promote there for a Saturday night. We had 8 girls and got in with no major trouble for the 'club' part. Pretty decent for Hollywood, I ain't complaining. The place is not amazing by any means and though we had a good time, I don't have a strong desire to come back. Bathroom lines were long at time, drinks are priced how they are in Hollywood and the crowd was slightly older and not very impressive. The indoor dance floor was kind of dead while the patio was popping. We ended up hanging out mostly outdoors and tried to dance to music that played at clubs probably when I was 5 years old. We had a good time here, and popped over to another club soon after. Maybe I will come back when I'm 35 years old.
by Lisa W. on What exactly do I like about El Rio? Hmm. I've ruminated on that one quite a bit... It's certainly not the location. I live off Geary. I mean, I just as well assume pop on down to Pacific Grove for a beer as hit up El Rio. It's certainly not the bartenders. I consistently get the stinkiest service when I'm there. Especially if there's a show going on. I once put in a good 45 minutes trying to get the bartender's attention, then he finally came over, took our orders, walked away, and never brought us our drinks. Grr... It's not the bar itself. That place is WAY too narrow to have a shuffleboard table anywhere in the vicinity of the bar. I've never had so many drinks spilled on my back in a single night as I have at El Rio It's not the crowd. For having as awesome a garden area as they do... Heck, it just might be the next best thing to Zeitgeist. But for some reason I love the hipsters that gather in the den of drunkenness at Zeitgeist; they're friendly and I'm friendly and everybody gets along. Not so at El Rio... Okay. WTF? I don't really know why I like this place... Except last night I was sitting out back, outside, with a quartet of friends, ignoring all the people we weren't interested in, avoiding the bar and the bartenders, laughing and drinking and smoking and having a great old time. And that tends to happen there.
