by Alyssa P. on I went to Gloria's with my boyfriend and friend. I am vegetarian, so asked the waitress which vegetarian (I thought) dish she would recommend. The cheese enchiladas I got were underwhelming. I loved the black bean dip that was quickly brought to our table when we sat down. Imagine my surprise when upon complimenting it to the waitress she happily replied, "yeah that's because it's made with chicken broth!" That's great for them to tell this to a vegetarian as she is blindly chowing down. WTF kind of black bean dip is made with chicken broth, and why wouldn't they see fit to make that known, especially in a city bursting with vegetarians? I understand the beans being made with chicken broth (they are) but have never had complimentary dip at a restaurant (salsa, etc) that was made with animal products. I was feeling sick after that, but not nearly as bad as when I finished my margarita and thought I was going to hurl. As I had my head between my knees in the bathroom, I overheard some women talking about the very margaritas that were making me feel like curling up in a ball on the floor. Let me be clear-- I can handle a strong margarita. I don't think a margarita is worth the money at a restaurant unless it's strong. It wasn't that their margaritas were too strong; I don't actually know what it was, but it wasn't because they were generous with the tequila (Trudy's Mexican Martinis never had such an effect on me). I gather it's either the mix they use or something else, but as other women were talking about I don't think it was a one-time thing (one said she had boycotted Gloria's for 2 years after the last time she had their margaritas). Suffice to say I will not be returning.
by Jacob T. on The food isn't the greatest but go for the booty-shakin' show they have! Male and female performers dance and sing while you dine and it's FABULOUS! Do try the mojitos... although tasty they might be a little inconsistent. And don't get the souvenir glass... it's more expensice. Overall, a fun place to start out a night on South Beach... go for the experience and the decor, not the food.
