I'm going to write only about the space and decor because I actually understand that THERE ARE DIFFERENT PROMOTING COMPANIES AND CROWDS ON DIFFERENT NIGHTS. Seriously, if you don't like the music, crowd, or the guys hitting on you, write a review about the promoting company, not the space! Yes, I understand the place isn't Voyeur, Boulevard 3, or Vegas, but it's a hell of a lot classier and nicer than Cabana, Industry, or My House. It has high ceilings with an upper tier where you can watch people dancing below. When it gets really full, the entire bottom floor just becomes a huge dance floor. Classy lighting and bar space as well. Also, the feel is just more Downtown, which is a nice change if you're always clubbing in Hollywood. The outside architecture is gorgeous and it's close to all of the yummy drunk food places in Downtown.

I've been to 111 Minna on a handful of occasions now, and for each time, it has been for some sort of group (typically Hyphen magazine parties). As such, this review may not truly reflect what this venue is like on a "regular" night. For each time I have been, there have been two entirely different things going on in each room. In the front room with the main bar, there is typically a DJ spinning music and an open area near the front where people are dancing. In the side/back room, there have usually been live acts performing on stage, which is nice to take in should you be fortunate to grab a seat in the booths or along the wall. If you should happen to park yourself in the area between the two rooms, it makes it interesting to hear a guy playing a ukulele in one ear while hearing hip-hop beats in the other. There are two bars, with the larger of the two situated in the front room. Drinks can be slow coming on busier nights, but they are generally well-made and well-priced. In fact, they even have the larger sized bottles of Newcastle for only $6, which is really good considering most other bars would charge $5 for the standard size. Also, being an art gallery, they do tend to have a rotating collection/showing of art pieces on their walls to be viewed and appreciated. However, being that there is so much alcohol readily available, I do wonder how the artist would feel if some patron got really hammered and just took it out on the walls.

A truly singular New York experience, top to bottom. I have never seen or experienced anything quite like it in this city, and yet everything about it is SO New York. I may be overstating things here, but it renewed my faith in New York nightlife. I was invited to the Virgin America launch party there, and even then my guest and I had to wait about 20 min to get in. The facade is nothing: an old, run down graffitied door. If it weren't for the crowds outside, you would walk right by it. But it's by far one of the toughest doors I've seen. There were 6 (count 'em), PR girls with headsets outside the door, including the one who invited me, and we still couldn't get in right away - "capacity issues," and all that. Even a personal friend of the CEO of Virgin America couldn't get in. The CEO had to come out and get him. Quintessential New York exclusivity. Once inside, it's a whole other ballgame. Beautiful people fill the maze like, bi-level interior, modeled after a New Orleans theater in homage to the Hammerstein Ballroom. Gorgeous bartenders and servers passed champagne and special cocktails (thank god for open bar - I hear the price tags are outrageous). Music bounced from hip-hop, to house, to Prince, to funk and soul, without blinking an eye. Somehow it worked. But what made the night superb was the Variety Show which apparently happens nightly at midnight. It's here that you get transported to somewhere between 20's Berlin and 19th Century Paris. The androgynous, bleach-blond, inked host (whose name escapes me) MC's a list of acts that includes a blues singer, burlesque dancers, a hip-hop Harlem trio, a Double Dutch team, a bluegrass duo, acrobats, and tops it all off with a full-on Can-Can. I couldn't stop smiling the entire time The whole experience was classic, modern, urban, exclusive, diverse, and utterly fabulous. Without a similar invite or someone else picking up the tab, I doubt I'll be back, but it's an experience I won't soon forget.
