by Kelsey F. on I think I would be annoyed if I had to pay a 5 dollar cover to get in here (waived due to a friend's birthday party, and being on "the list"). Before midnight, the bar is manageable, with enough room to dance in our own little space and even have a dance circle with people getting down in the middle. But once it nears midnight, fuggedaboudit. The only dance you'll be doing is the sardine push and shove shuffle. Beers are only $4, but my friend's mojito was a club-like $12, and shots are around $8. Where are we, the Empire Hotel? But like I said, even if you are willing to pay that much for a drink, it's still going to take you a good amount of time to get to the bar with all the other sardines attempting the same. Music is generally good. Lot's of old school hip hop! Except I found that the good stuff came in waves. So, I would be in total dance mode and then then next few songs would put me to sleep. Lastly, I am about 5'6", and with a heel on I felt like one of the tallest people in the place. One of the only tall guys was sporting a curly-haired mullet and 70's-style spectacles. That was exciting to see every time I looked over the sea of people.
by Long Durbin on intimate, friendly, pretty good layout for dancing although the bar right next to the dancefloor and some poles near it can get in the way. sound system is very good, though maybe not quite the very best. really great DJs and (especially house) music and really great dancers--it usually attracts people who are up for several hours of serious dancing. my only complaint is that sometimes the breakdancers get carried away, forming three circles in a small dancefloor, & I have been in there for 90 minutes or longer when only the breakdancers were dancing and everyone else just stands around. I can get it for a few minutes, but i paid to dance, not watch other people show off while i & everyone else stands still (I'm not sure if it's the club's fault, but it's happened quite a few times that i've been there, so there you go.)
by Daron Nirenberg on Red House is a great place to hang, indoors or outdoors. Last night some members of Biznik met there to discuss good toasting techniques and also share what we each need for 2008 for our business. Red House provided the perfect blend of quiet private area to talk with friends and also open lounge relaxed vibe. SOmetimes when you are at a bar lounge discussing business it can feel like the place is too loud but they have several comfy indoor areas to sit (all in one big room with the bar) and also several gathering areas outdoors. Now that the weather has gotten cooler, they have outdoor heaters and it looked like blankets at some of the tables so people could keep warm. We sat inside next to the Christmas tree on a couch and 4 comfortable chairs. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. We shared appetizers... beets were good but kind of soupy for an app, bread with goat cheese and rosemary honey was good but after one slice enough, french fries with aoli were excellent. I would definitely recommend whether you are interested in a cool place to have an intimate conversation or if you need a place that could easily seat 6 people for a small meeting/business happy hour. The Red House lounge is a great find.
