by Ani B. on Comedy: 5 Service: 4.5 Seating: 3 Prices: 2 (everything is too expensive!) The Improv is one of my preferred comedy clubs, but it's on the pricey side. I've been to many shows here, and have never been disappointed. Rarely is there a comedian on stage who doesn't have the audience laughing. This place is definitely not home to mediocre, amateur comedians though some newbies pop up now and then (but the Improv won't allow just anyone on stage, unless you go to their open mic during the week). Even the newbies are always solid, hilarious comedians. Weekend shows are always performed by pros and comedy vets. Famous comedians also frequently make guest appearances at the weekend shows. Things I don't like about the Improv: The two item minimum wouldn't be so bad, if everything on the menu wasn't so pricey! Tickets alone range from $15 to $35 (or more for special events). The ticket price on top of the 2 item minimum (with a menu where EVERYTHING is pricey) means a decently large bill by the end of the night. I've even eaten at the restaurant here and the food is awesome, but way too expensive. My boyfriend and I had mozzarella sticks and two drinks in the restaurant before the show, which ran us about $35 excluding tip (portions weren't even big) but it was delicious. Seating: it's a small place, and I understand that they don't have much room for tables/chairs, but some of the seats here are downright terrible. You have to turn your neck/chair every which way, or sit sideways to get a decent view of the stage from some of the seats. You'll have to get here a bit early if you really want to get a good seat. The crowd, which is largely late 20's and above, can sometimes also feel a little "stuffy" if you know what I mean, but it's great when there's a younger, or more laid back crowd at the show. Overall, the prices here sadly often keep me away from The Improv (the prices aren't very welcoming to broke college kids!!) but it's not as a result of the comedic talent here at all. As far as comedic talent, it's excellent and one of the best in LA.
by Jennifer N. on We have walked past Mamajuana a few million times -- we see the crowds sitting outside on weekends, and sometimes we even hear Mamajuana's music. But today, we finally got our acts together and had dinner at Mamajuana. We were definitely on the early side for Mamajuana- we got there around 7p and things were more quiet than festive (there were about six tables filled when we arrived). But the music was on the loud side - and very good - and the room's funky ambience (flowering cacti and orchids, lots of candles) made the place feel fun. It seems like the kind of place where you should meet a group of friends for some drinks and empanadas- after about thirty minutes, you'll find that everything is just really, really fun. It's the kind of place that feels festive and funky and interesting and cool. We started with the calamari which was served with salad (a mix of arugula and watercress) with a citrus dressing -- I fell in love with the salad. I loved the combination of the fresh greens, the tart dressing, and the crispy calamari. For the main course, I had the pechuga de pollo (chicken breast stuffed with jam and manchego, served with spinach). I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the combination of jam, cheese, and chicken, but it won me over - the chicken was served in thin, long slices, making visible the layers of cheese, spinach, and jam, and the chicken itself was cooked to perfection. My parents both had the tilapia (and raved about it though neither seemed crazy about the cheesy rice served with the fish), and my husband had the delicious (and oversized) churrasco frites (grilled skirt steak served with garlic fries). We had flan for dessert (we wanted the "hot chocolate cake." To be honest, I'm not even sure what a hot chocolate cake is, but it sounded too good to pass on. Unfortunately, they didn't have it yet). The flan was good enough, not extraordinary, but satisfied our sweet cravings. The only downside to Mamajuana- we had two moments where they just didn't have what we wanted: the dessert mishap (mentioned above) and they didn't actually have all of the beers that they list on their menu. But we quickly forgave them -- our waitress (Roxana) was so sweet and funny, and the dim funky room had a fun feel that was just contagious. Before I knew it, our conversation was getting louder and more boisterous, and we were just having a great time.
