I like the place despite all things concerned. Its odd to be here since the venue was still being built the last time I was there over 3 odd years ago. And to finally come full circle and to see it finished is fascinating. Makes me almost nostalgic. The time does pass by rather quickly though. They do make some mean drinks. Looking over the menu I found that they make Caparinas. Two kinds apparently - one the traditional way of pure simplicity and another way rimmed with sugary perfection. The mix of sugar and alcohol helped take my mind of the jaw dropping number of hours that I would wait to leave SF once again. Though with the ambiance, music, clientele and libations... the wait I didnt mind so much. ;D
by Nickole Roh on I found the flaw at woodfire grill and I am about to share it with you - it's a significant flaw and warrants pointing out so you guys are prepared and make a well-informed decision about this place. The flaw: there's a tear in the plaster on the men's room wall. There. I said it and frankly I feel good about not covering that up. Now you know. As for everything else here - good luck finding a flaw. This was the chosen spot for my birthday dinner with family. We walked in excited, but I admit I was concerned that, with this being the 3rd TC contestant's establishment I would be visiting, I was going to turn into one of 'those people'. I walked out realizing that the reason this was my favorite meal in years (if not longer) had nothing to do with dudeman being on the telly - it was because of the 5+ amazing courses that were so magnificently prepared to the point that I often heard at our table "I don't usually like _______ but that was amazing" - it was alsp because my family, who have never done a tasting menu, experienced countless items they would never ever try due to it never being the 'safe' option they tend to order, and they loved practically every bite - it was because I walked out remembering every detail of every course and the character of every paired wine (and face it, this wasn't my 21st birthday - old man Barney B has a rough time remembering what cereal he had this morning). The space is complementary to the warm, smokey, comfortable food you are about to enjoy. The wines are paired perfectly with the courses - the service is exactly what it should be - friendly, informative, interactive and non-hovering. it's just that plaster - the one fault in an otherwise sublime package. and obviously I am stretching even with that.

FLIP as a venue is completely out of place for that section of Howell Mill Rd, or even that part of West Midtown. After all, the most popular restaurants in that area besides FLIP are Waffle House and Mr.C's. Far from being a simple hole in the wall, FLIP is an extremely trendy spot, complete with smartly dressed waitstaff, clean lines, and house music pumped throughout the dining room. I was annoyed that not only was there no football on any of the four screens behind the bar, but the music videos that were shown didn't correspond to the music being heard. The menu is simple - various varieties of burgers and sides - but they were tasty. I ordered my FLIP burger without ketchup (ketchup is for people who don't like their food) and I was happy with the result. The fries were cooked perfectly, and the Krispy Kreme milkshake was very tasty. I decided to explore the wine list, and I would beware of anything outside your standard grape varieties. There is a red Spanish wine blend on the list that actually burns as it goes down - like MD 20/20 mixed with turpentine. FLIP is a perfect place to go with friends after work or before hitting the clubs, not for a random stop for a quick burger. The prices are also a bit steep for what you get - but that's what trendy is all about.
