Be prepared to be profiled when you walk in the door. Your dress and look will determine your seating. The well dressed patrons will be seated in the upper section with white linen tables and classy features. The rest of the casual dressed will quickly be led down to to lower area with picnic style tables for the upper level to look down on while they are enjoying their fancy feast. The food and service is great.

One of my very hip co-homosexual friends decided to make his boyfriend dress up in a tuxedo and drag him and several of his other friends to the Starlight Room for a birthday gathering, despite my pasting of negative Rateclub reviews to him over instant message. I put on the velvet suit jacket, a tie, and some newly dry-cleaned pants and made the trek to Union Square to go hang out with what I thought would be an over-priced yet classy shindig. I was only half-right. The cover charge was $20, and I felt like I was standing in line at a Vegas strip club, which is something that no self-respecting gay man should ever have to do. Once inside, there was a Sly and the Family Stone cover band blocking the nice part of the view facing Union Square, so my $20 didn't even get me a nice view. While I stepped away to get my drink, Harry Denton himself came over to say hello to my group and took a picture with them. "Did he at least buy you a round?" I asked when I returned. Not a chance. My $10 vodka gimlet was fine, but disastrously overpriced. It was made from Absolut (you know, the vodka/lighter fluid that you can use to make a cheap cosmo or light your barbecue?) and served to me by a bartender in a white jacket. The highlight of the trip was watching a couple begin to have "relations" in the window of the hotel across the way. I think we stayed there all of 20 minutes, meaning that I basically paid $1 per minute for my trip to Harry Denton's Starlight Room. I could have called Miss Cleo and had a very enlightening conversation for that price. The one highlight -- those famous elderly twins, Marian and Vivian Brown, were in the lobby of the hotel on our way out. I asked my friend why he didn't stop to get his picture taken with them, and he chalked it up to being "creeped out" by the experience. We wandered down Geary to Polk and had fantastic cocktails at Lush. And the best part was that we were the nicest dressed people in the place.
