I was here for an early dinner on a Tuesday night. We had tried to go to Tao after shopping at Barneys, but it was closed for a private party. Sad. Oh well, it's probably not that good anyway. We crossed the street and went to Lavo, which as it turns out is the sister restaurant of Tao. The seating was really strange. The place was almost completely empty (like I said, it was 4:00PM) and he hostess had to radio to another hostess in the back and get us a table number and okay seating us with her. Are you serious, Lavo? Don't be those people. Don't act all high and mighty because you are apparently "hot" right now. You were not even our first choice! Whatever, its smells good in here, so I am going to assume the food is good too, just seat us already. Once the whole big fancy seating ordeal is over, the friendly waitress comes to take our drink order and takes my friend's wine order and then leaves. Ah, hello? Yes, I want wine too. It makes me a bigger tipper, so chop chop with my vino. There are two people at the table and you only take one person's drink order? That's incredibly strange. When she finally came back to take my order, she didn't apologize or anything. She acted like it is perfectly normal to take one order at a time. Again, whatever. I am ready to order food now, or does she have to leave and come back for that, too? Luckily, she takes our food order at the same time as my drink and I am crossing my fingers that we are smooth sailing for the remainder of the experience. Of course the food wound up taking too long to arrive at the table, but I gave this three stars instead of two because the food was really good and so was the wine. We split three appetizers: Kobe rice balls, clams oreganata and Kobe beef carpaccio. All three were very tasty and filling, I would certainly go back for the food. I would like to try a full on meal next time. By the time we left around 6, the entire front where the bar is was pretty packed. Many of the tables had filled up in the dining room and all the cafe tables were taken. What a difference two hours makes! From the other reviews it seems like this is a "hot spot" or a place to see and be seen, but I just can't picture that. The decor sort of reminds me of Les Halles, and there is a nightclub next door that is of the same name. I don't entirely understand the concept....I am assuming it's like the Meatpacking's late Vento? Try it for the food, leave before the nightlife.

Brunch rocks here. I am on the quest to find the best bloody mary in the city, and if you yourself make a good one, this could easily top the list ;-) I love the make-your-own bloody mary bar, but aside from that, the food is amazing, the service is friendly, attentive, and unpretentious, and the atmosphere is funky without trying too hard. I love this place, and it has consistently ranked as one of my favorite brunches in the city. I've been only twice before for non-brunch (and I'm not sure why that is). My last visit here, we sat at the bar because they were absolutely packed. The bartender was so apologetic for the time it took to get our orders out from the kitchen, that she very graciously (and unnecessarily) comped our drinks--which was half our bill for my friend and I.
