by Cornell Clairmont on In NY or Vegas, I love Tao. Be prepared to be eating in the middle of a nightclub, but the food is worth it. I dream of the sea bass and the miso cod. Other notable appetizers include the spicy tuna on crispy rice and crab cakes. It's amazing this place is still a "scene" after being around for so many years, but the vibrant lounge area, beautiful zen Asian decor and great service keep people coming back, and it is the most popular Asian restaurant in NY. Nice mix of tourists and locals, and you can always spot a celebrity or two. Tao very rarely disappoints. The only thing I would not recommend on the menu is the shabu shabu. I prefer mine a little more authentic, and the flavor was a bit odd.
by Martin Dibenedict on I had a fan-freakintastic time here this weekend. Only downside was that I dumped a drink on a poor girl. I tried to buy her another one....but she wouldn't let me. Sorry dude!! The music was really fun, I knew every song, and I got to dance on a box like a go-go dancer. Everyone was polite, no crappy crowd behavior like I expected, and I even met some pirates. The next time I am in town I know that I will come here to dance. SO surprised to actually just find a fun nice environment to dance. Bar is cash only. No ice water, but drinking fountains near the bathrooms. Tickets are cheaper if you buy them in advance or before 10pm; we got there about 10:30 and had no trouble getting in, $12 bucks each...good thing because I was about to pee in line. Next time I'm totally wearing a dorky pirate hat.
by Mira C. on Went here last night with a group of friends. The building looks great - they probably spent more money on the decor more than anything else. Honestly, everything was very stereotypically LA: people were (or tried to be) pretty, the restaurant was (or tried to be) trendy and everything was completely predictable. The food was mediocre at best, but was WAY overpriced. The appetizers were good, but didn't make up for the poor selection in entrees and it's always sad when the best part of your meal is dessert. There are tons of places where you can pay for the ambiance and the pretty people and the drinks and still be full once you drop as much money as we did. I did think it was cool that you could have dinner, then go downstairs and go to the club. If you're uber special, you can gain access to the lounge on the roof, but note to the managers: the incense up there is a little too strong. I didn't have that much to drink and I had a headache and wanted to throw up. All in all, Kress is a place you'd want to go if you're in the mood for stereotypical LA, or if you have guests new to LA and want to show them everything at one convenient location. I'd go back (ok, no, I probably won't) for the lounge or the club, but never would I pay for their food again. This place was definitely not what it was hyped up to be.
