King King on Saturday nights used to be my favorite place to go to listen and to dance some good house music. When i say used to that is about more than 6 years ago and now it is the 2010. I am rating two stars because i still have good friends and great memories from this place but recently king king had turned into a queen-queen. Long story short, if you are a house music lover and your expecting your favorite Dj's to be who they really are and to play their music for which they are known, your wrong. Every single Dj that have had performed there (the most recent once)  Dj's like Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, Heather from Chicago, Ron Caroll.........had gone from that deep chicago house music into something absurd. and when I ask them why ( i am actually lucky to know personally some of them ) they say it's Hollywood and that people aren't ready for it. Now this been said, I have completely lost my interest of visiting king king because it became one of the typical Hollywood clubs that includes supper expensive cover charges, rocket high parking prices and whats most disturbing is the crowd that are there to stand in the middle of the dance floor and stare  ....and on top of all as i have mentioned earlier, the Dj's play no longer a deep house music for which Saturdays was famous for.

I find it interesting that Rateclub has this place listed as a gay bar. While it seems pretty obvious that most the bar staff and a lot of the customers are women that prefer women this place is also much much more. It would be fair to also call El Rio A dive bar, a neighborhood meeting place, and a band venue. The bloody marys are far superior to the much ballyhooed craptacular ones they crank out at Zeitgeist and two dollars cheaper. They also have a much nicer patio, with far fewer douche bags occupying it, than the one at Zeitgeist. This is just generally a great place to hang out and watch bands.

I swear, it was my first trip to Austin. I had no idea exactly where to go but ended up here with my friends and have never felt more welcome and invited. It was so casual, comfortable, and great people. We chatted up four or so other customers who all offered good friendship, advice on where to go, and phone numbers for future visits. The best part of the night was definitely our BARTENDER Scott....he treated us like royalty. Absolutely will return to hopefully find him on his shift. Friendly, smiling, warm, inviting, and all of the other "nice" words....he was all of them. Many thanks to Scott and there rest of the friendly folks in Austin.
