Hands down, this is the best bar that I have ever been to. The decor alone was enough to catch my attention. Walking through a back entrance into an empty room, guiding you down stairs reminds you of an old speakeasy. Lining the stairs are squirrel-cage lights, leading you into a secret, steampunk-looking bar, complete with fairies pushing around carts of absinthe. The food is tasty, but let's be real, you didn't come for the food. You came for the booze. And booze is what you should have. With Edison-specific cocktails as well as a laundry-list of choices, you are sure to find something amazing. While you feel like you are in the most secret club in L.A., enjoy the old movies playing on the brick walls. Drinks are best served on a Burlesque-night. :) This is the best-kept secret in L.A., and I am scared that even by reviewing it, everyone will ruin it.

I am going to go easy on Pure since they are newly opened and I would much rather have them versus the Grape in Inman Park. I have been long awaiting their opening and as their next door neighbor, we kept tabs on all of the progress and literally breathed the fumes that helped build the place. I have been twice since they opened and while I am a fan of their space--a little funky--and their cute staff, their food was average at best. After all of the hype, their food was a bit bland and very greasy. We tried the queso fundido and the grease dripped out of the tortilla shell; the chicken soup was greasy as well. We tried a few of the tacos and they were rather bland. Calamari-average. Margaritas-average(too much sour mix). Fish tacos-average. Dessert-average. Too sweet and too much like a frozen dessert out of a box at the grocery store. I guess I can say that I am not too much a fan of the food... The vibe is fun and a great place for drinks, but it is very loud in there, so if you want to have a conversation, go elsewhere. But if you want to go and get a buzz on, it is a perfect place for happy hour. And I suspect once the sun comes back out and it is Spring again, the place will be even more packed than it already is...

I'll preface this by saying that I went with a bad attitude to begin with. Places like this just aren't my scene, but it was a friend's birthday so I decided to go with the flow and see what this place was like. Strike number one was the $15 door charge. I've said it once and I'll say it again, unless there is a band (and a good one, at that), I'm anti-cover charge. There are too many other choices, without a cover charge, for me to even consider going to a pretentious club like Saint and dropping $15 to walk in the door. Strike number two: rude, pushy people who will go to all lengths to cut through the crowds. Strike number three, and perhaps the biggest strike if you ask me, was the rude staff. Right from the get-go the door guys were jerks. Get off your high horse- you're a bouncer. It takes a saint to make it through a night here without giving them a piece of your mind. Which means I'm no saint.
