by Cat N. on Bottom line: still loyal to Nam Phuong but this place gets its props for sure! Eat here! Parking is a pain. That's the worst of it! The decor is really nice - well lighted, and the effort to make a modern dining room is appreciated, since most Vietnamese places take for granted that we will eat well-made food in dingy dives. I really liked the neat series of tiles and back splashes that are tied together throughout the restaurant walls and the floors. The space isn't huge, but it is open and the dining room is comfortable. Prices are very reasonable, and it's a BYO! There are TV's and a bar (with no alcohol we guess) along one wall. The service was great - the staff was polite, confirmed our orders in English and Vietnamese, and made fun small talk. They asked our preference on the order of the dishes arriving, which I appreciated. Mary and I pigged out a little: We had the bitter melon slaw (goi kho qua)- AMAZING. The bitter melon slivers were tender and retained some of their bitterness, which we loved. It was tossed lightly in a sweet fish sauce, and served with fresh steamed shrimp and shrimp crackers. We ordered eggplant in Vietnamese scallion oil (ca tim xao mo hanh). We both love eggplant and love scallion oil dishes, but they couldn't pull it off. The eggplant should have the skin on to prevent it from getting fall-apart mushy in the oil. Without the skin, the presentation was less appealing - plain white eggplant flesh, laid out and sliced on a white dish - it looked like we had ordered a whole fish. Scallion oil dishes require seasoning with fish sauce before adding the oil - it was so salty we were parched for hours afterward. Why am I giving it 4 stars? The clay pot caramelized pork spare ribs (suon ram) tastes like mom made it! It's the best suon ram I've had in Vietnamese restaurants around. And that - combined with the beautiful restaurant, awesome service, and bittermelon slaw totally gets us over the eggplant fiasco. Yummers!
