I was here for an early dinner on a Tuesday night. We had tried to go to Tao after shopping at Barneys, but it was closed for a private party. Sad. Oh well, it's probably not that good anyway. We crossed the street and went to Lavo, which as it turns out is the sister restaurant of Tao. The seating was really strange. The place was almost completely empty (like I said, it was 4:00PM) and he hostess had to radio to another hostess in the back and get us a table number and okay seating us with her. Are you serious, Lavo? Don't be those people. Don't act all high and mighty because you are apparently "hot" right now. You were not even our first choice! Whatever, its smells good in here, so I am going to assume the food is good too, just seat us already. Once the whole big fancy seating ordeal is over, the friendly waitress comes to take our drink order and takes my friend's wine order and then leaves. Ah, hello? Yes, I want wine too. It makes me a bigger tipper, so chop chop with my vino. There are two people at the table and you only take one person's drink order? That's incredibly strange. When she finally came back to take my order, she didn't apologize or anything. She acted like it is perfectly normal to take one order at a time. Again, whatever. I am ready to order food now, or does she have to leave and come back for that, too? Luckily, she takes our food order at the same time as my drink and I am crossing my fingers that we are smooth sailing for the remainder of the experience. Of course the food wound up taking too long to arrive at the table, but I gave this three stars instead of two because the food was really good and so was the wine. We split three appetizers: Kobe rice balls, clams oreganata and Kobe beef carpaccio. All three were very tasty and filling, I would certainly go back for the food. I would like to try a full on meal next time. By the time we left around 6, the entire front where the bar is was pretty packed. Many of the tables had filled up in the dining room and all the cafe tables were taken. What a difference two hours makes! From the other reviews it seems like this is a "hot spot" or a place to see and be seen, but I just can't picture that. The decor sort of reminds me of Les Halles, and there is a nightclub next door that is of the same name. I don't entirely understand the concept....I am assuming it's like the Meatpacking's late Vento? Try it for the food, leave before the nightlife.

Oh man, everyone told me what a "drunken good time" Hong Kong would be. Well, my advice is not to go on a Wednesday night around 9:30 when there are a grand total of 4 people in the joint including the bouncer, bartender and a couple drinking at the bar. We ordered the fabled scorpion bowl and it was about $16. The bartender said it went up in price a buck last week. To be honest, it was gross. It tasted very powdery to me. Is this not real juice? I can think of a bunch of tiki/ polynesian places where I've had similar big ass bowls of booze and usually a fond memory pops up. This place is depressing. Plain brown walls with a few "oriental" touches above a supposedly mediocre restaurant. Everyone comes here to drink. Well, I advise you to go home because you'll probably get a better atmosphere and you'll be in the company of friends and not the two sad lonely monkeys floating in our plain planter-esque type bowl. Wow, maybe I should have gone to the more hyped location in Boston.

I had such a good time here the other night. First of all, I didn't have to pay a cover. THEN: It was a big birthday group and somehow one of the servers took a shine to us and let us sit in the VIP bottle service area! There was even security kicking others out for us. Bar downstair was crowded and the drinks were weak. Bar upstairs was better and our server gave us much stronger drinks. Live 80s cover band every Friday night, I loved it. Large dance floor, lots of room in the bathroom. The main issue was the cost of drinks, but I guess you have to expect that in LA. xxx C
