Grace Tavern completes the "Bermuda Triangle" of bars in the western portion of Graduate Hospital. Why liken these bars to a geographic associated with mysterious disappearances? I'll tell you why. With so many delicious "high-test" beers being served between these three establishments, you could literally fall off the Earth if you are not careful. Even the famed Larry Kusche wouldn't know how to rationalize this one. Anyway, Grace Tavern is a good local spot with a nice tap list and formidable burgers. During my last visit, they had almost exclusively porters and stouts on tap which was disappointing. I realize gastropubs (Grace is more of a plain old pub) nowadays feature ever changing tap lists, which I love, however, on occasion the selection ends up on a dead-end road in Portertown, which is fine for porter lovers, that's just not my preferred scenery. The interior of Grace is a little rough. Its dark, and a little dank. The smell of cigarette smoke must be ingrained in the wood from the good old days. The prices are reasonable, and the bartenders and wait staff are friendly. The place gets pretty crowded in the evenings, so you might have to wait for a table if you are coming for dinner, something I was unprepared for on my first visit. Overall, Grace is a good spot to have a beer (or a few) and a burger. I wouldn't say its a great spot, but I don't think its trying to be. Grace is confident in who she is, a local bar with beer and food, and there's nothing wrong with that.

A very cool, modern, upscale lounge where the pretty people hang out. I arrived to Halo with a group of friends to attend the Lucid Absinthe Launch Party. There was a good crowd for a Thursday and the Absinthe was flowing free-ly... I mean literally, everyone received two free absinthe drink vouchers (I used only one) and, frankly, if it had not been free, there would have been a lot less absinthe flowing... The entrance to Halo is rather non-discript on a side street giving the impression of a well-kept secret. Upon entering, the lounge has a very lofty ceiling but maintains an intimate mood with indirect lighting. The scene from the entrance is dominated by a long, straight bar uniquely lit from within to provide the dominant lighting for the bar area. There are also numerous areas with seating which enable groups to gather. Adding to the ambience, a DJ played upbeat music at a level that you could talk over with a little effort (and with the help of intimate invasion of personal space ;) ) and the bartenders were friendly, approachable and helped with drink decisions.
