by tom thumb on MY first visit to this place and was kinda shocked. I was met by a fat, rude, ugly doorman. The females were all over 50. And the place was a complete sausage fest. All the men were low rent, ghetto, and pencil dicks. All i wanted was a meal.I was the only person there who wasn't trying to get laid. Sick men everywhere begging ladies to go home with them.I even had a few men ask me to leave with them. THEY NEED TO FIRE ALL THE SECURITY GUYS THERE. They all walked around with sticks up there ass thinking they were god's gift to the world.
by susan s. on The place where you find the most confused group of people. I've been to Marquee several times throughout the years, and tonight was probably the worst night ever. For a Thursday night, there was a small line outside waiting to enter. The door guys were not very friendly, and we were meeting a promoter for VIP tables. We looked at the group of people in line, and some girls were dressed up, but some college frat boy looking guys in flip flops and baggy jeans were also standing in line. We got in the door with no problem by mentioning promoters name, but we were handed some little Marquee cards to give to the cashier. Is there a cover for other people?! When we entered the club, a big bouncer pointed us to the roped off area which led us to COAT CHECK. Is it a requirement? We were confused. When we got to the front of the line, it was $4. I didnt even know how long we would be staying, so we snuck out of the line, and proceeded to the dance floor area. SHOCKED the crowd of people... some OLD OLD men were there, and some college frat boys, and a couple of girls, everyone pretty much spread out throughout the club, and not really packed. Horrible house music playing on the first floor so we went upstairs only to find WORSE music. A scantily clad dressed cute chick with black lipstick was playing RAVER music. I felt like I was back in the early 90s. Who still listens to that crap? I was informed by several people that "hip hop" would be coming on in 20 minutes. 20 minutes turned into an hour of drinking off the promoters bottle, and not enjoying the video game headache music. Looking around, we had a group of 15 HOT HOT rocker crowd. Everyone dressed to the 9s. Our table was the best dressed and stuck together. I couldn't stand the music anymore, so we had to go.... I vow to never come back here. Meatpacking club scene is just not my cup of tea anymore..
by Isaac B. on Great music from legendary DJ's most of the time that has an intimate feel and great decor with individualized fluorescent lights that make the walls surrounding a dance floor that separates it from those not wanting to dance...all of the makings of a great dance club in NYC right? It was for a while until the Meatpacking District...sorry...the MPD became saturated with pseudo hip spots and overrun with people. I grew up in the area and it's amazing to see the changes that have taken place. I'd say many venues in that area that had been able to cater to specific audiences are now facing huge changes in demographics, which also makes some outsiders also resent the "hip" culture. Anyway, Deep Space on Monday's with Francois K is probably the best party, not just because of the music, but because of the crowd and ability to actually dance. For folks who are reading other recent reviews, sometimes Francois K has either a guest DJ who might go in a different direction, or he himself strays away from his dubby set. It's more for electronic music fans than a night to go crazy. It's also cheaper than $10 (I think $6) if you come before 10pm. I've actually never been to Louie Vegas Roots party, but I hear that it's great for classic house music heads. My favorite for a while was Tedd Patterson's once monthly Vibal set of tech/deep/percussive/funky house but since it's on a Saturday night I don't really go anymore. The place is just insanely packed, and not necessarily filled with electronic music fans, on weekends. Dancing can only be done with modest attempts at jacking or moving one's body, so if you really want to go crazy...good luck, or wait until after 2am when the place clears out some of the B&T crowd. Carl Craig now has a quarterly residency there on a Thursday night, the first of which I went to in February, and is a great addition to their already stellar lineup. I even had a chance to meet him after his set and get an autographed promo copy of his remix to Junior Boys - 'Like A Child' which was nominated for a Grammy this past year. Cielo's roster is filled with great DJ's and often great guest DJ's, but it's now too small for the size crowd it now attracts, and the bouncers have become far more rigid as a result. This means folks who are really into dance/electronic music have to deal with this, and sometimes for me, would just rather go somewhere else. We need new areas outside of downtown Manhattan and Williamsburg for electronic/dance music to develop here. Too bad most of us NYers are snobby about where we go out.
